UPDATE - Meth Fire at dealer

Hi Guys,

UPDATE - After the dealer performed an alignment, they test drove the car and a Meth fire started as the technician was driving the car.

The SA said:
While on the road test for the alignment your car caught fire at the left front.

We performed a smoke test on the washer tank after the fire was put out & we have smoke leaking out of from the washer pump area. Looks like the methanol leaked out of the pump & blew back onto the exhaust igniting the fire. We have some basic disassembly performed to check the extent of the damage. We will need to perform further disassembly to get an estimate for the full extent of the damage.

Luckily the technician was close to the shop when he noticed a burning odor & was able to get back to the shop where one of the other technicians noticed the flames from under the car & grabbed a fire extinguisher keeping the apparent damage to wiring & plastic/rubber components.

I will need an approval of a diagnostic estimate of $309.00 to fully disassembly the burned area to put together a damage estimate. The diagnostic estimate will go towards the cost of repairs.

Problem is... the WW pump, gasket, filter, etc were replaced about 2 months ago, I have activated that pump 1 time to prime the system during a WOT pull, it has never been used since. The only thing I can imagine is that the Technician was trying to activate the WW sprayers and was wondering why they weren't coming on and probably just kept pulling at it thinking it needed to be primed

Nonetheless, I'm extremely distraught and hating myself for not doing the conversion to trunk 2 weeks ago when I was sourcing the parts for it.

I would talk with your SA. If he is cool maybe you dont have a problem. If it was me, i wouldnt give them an excuse, thus do what i can to get the car back before they reprogram. One of my SA told me to always unistall incase they had to reprogram and or ecu updates.

Thanks! I did a little more in-depth research also and it would seem that the air bag programming is separate, like they have a special adapter they connect directly to the module to program it, so it would seem I don't have much to worry about.

Thanks enrita! Good to know, I've read some horror stories (maybe with JB3/4?) I've seem some procede guys say map0/canclear off is pretty safe.

The only comm errors I've ever seen with a Procede was 1) defective unit and 2) communication to the Autologic drops when running any tune map (1, 2 or 4) with the engine running. In that case, I just have to run the Procede in Map 0 while driving around with the Autologic connected for diagnostics, but that's very rare.

If the Can system is off it should not interfere with the ECU re-program. BMW can reflash the ECU with a JB4 on map0 so I imagine the Procede is the same.

I have catless downpipes. Turning CANclear off would cause the SES light.

Should I still turn off CANclear?

Hmm, I have 3" Catless DPs too, drove 15-20 miles to the dealer with Map 0 and CANClear off, went WOT a couple times too, no SES light. Guess it depends on how sensitive your O2s are?

In order to trigger cat codes the car has to complete OBD2 readiness tests/cycles. It takes a few miles sometimes for that to happen.
