WiFi Dongle for a PC

Need advice from you IT peps. I’ve just switched over to BT broadband. Although the set-up went well, we only had a day of connection and now it’s gone down.

BT are claiming it’s because the Hub isn’t in the master socket (I run it from the bedroom socket) The reason I’ve done this is because the upstairs office PC is hard wired to the Hub. I’ve have been thinking to change this to a wireless set-up and buy a WiFi dongle for the PC. Any advice on a good one to buy?

Always a good idea to have the router in the master socket but surely it should still work wherever it's plugged in? You might get slower speeds but it should still work?

BT are useless. I had countless troubles so did my dad.

They blamed my PC for a very slow connection. Even though my PC, 3 laptops, 3 mobile phones and a brand new out the box apple mac all returned the same speed test results.

BT said 8.5mb connection, tests said 0.5mb. Could not stream YouTube.

After investigation they blamed my dads slow connection on the street lights. They also said the nearby trainline is affecting it too and that's bloody diesel trains!

You don't need to use master socket. Yes the speeds will be quicker but it should still work in any socket.

BT are the worst company I've ever dealt with and I'm not just talking about broadband providers. I mean the worst over all company EVER.

They tried to screw me over about 3 years ago, resulted in a huge battle with me demanding that certain people were sacked and ended with the CEOs personal assistant calling me to grovel. Had to use them again for a line installation last year and again they were a bloody nightmare.

I'm gald your installation went smoothly but I dare say there are problems to come. Worst company in the world in my opinion. I'd rather use carrier pigeon than rely on them.

I'm wondering that myself. three years with Pipex and it didn't miss a beat, BT were offering a good bundle.

The speed was 6.5 meg when it does work, much better than the 1.5 meg I was getting.

If you can get Virgin fibreoptic, that's the best.

I'm on 02 with a static IP and it's as good as ADSL gets. Not exactly cheap but I need a steady Internet connection.

The odd issue I've had is dealt with very well by a UK call centre.

Sadly I can't get Virgin broadband where I live. Come to think of it I can't get Virgins of any kind

Don't get me started on BT!

Damn, too late. The only reason why they're still in business is because it's a virtual monopoly. It doesn't matter what you do to avoid them at home or at work you'll have to deal with them at some point.

I had some sort of rush to the head and ordered a full BT Infinity package (phone, BB, BT Vision etc) after being told it was truly unlimited downloads (it's not), that they don't cap or throttle (they do) and that the Vision box was HD (it's not). Cancelled the day after ordering and currently struggling to stop them sending debt collectors round for the £6 they want to charge me for delivering the modem. Which they never actually delivered btw. I cancelled if you remember.

As far as work is concerned we're still dealing with the two days that BT cut us off, they haven't billed us correctly since April, no one actually does what they say they're going to do and in some cases just tell damn lies. I've also found out that the partner and company credit rating could have been effected because we ignored their demands for payment. The demands they were sending to themselves while we thought our quarterly direct debit was still in place. And apparently because they've had to effectively 'restart' our account we're now at the start of a new 5 year contract which no one I've spoken to seems to be able to alter.

Out of this whole company of incompetents the only people who seem to get something done are the BT Twitter team but obviously you can only communicate with them via Twitter. How fucking ridiculous is that?

Anyway. Yes. Be are very good. And I've been pleasantly suprised by Sky. Very efficient.

Our company had the same thing! An ISDN line for an older EDI mailbox.. In one of our data centers. They billed themselves for 6 months and then cut us off when they didn't pay themselves. Fucking idiots!

Another option is the cat-5 mains adaptors. I have one plugged into the router and then a few more dotted round the house (one on the tv for streaming video, one for the apple tv, one on my lads PS3 and one on the mac). More reliable and appear quicker than wifi connection.
