Depends on your mileage. If you doing midway from the recommended mileage of 100K miles and are not experiencing any problems, then a simple drain and fill is probably OK for both. At 100K miles, a flush might be better, particularly if no drain and fill was done earlier. Just my two cents.

A flush would always be better than a simple drain and fill (change)

i could be wrong but i dont think thats necessarily true. i agree with OP i dont know why it seems to be that people always flush the coolant and not just change it. but every other fluid i think if you change it regularly then it is better to change it and not flush it. i think the reason for this is, lets say you have a 1990 ford explorer and then in the year 20012 you want to change the tranny fluid. i think that it would be so old and corroded and what not in the tank that they need to put something in it to really clean it out before putting the new fluid in. the problem with this is that its very strong and can cause leaks and stuff. so if you change your fluid regularly then you will never need to flush it. that all being said i dont know why you cant just change the coolant and you need to flush it.

You generally flush coolant because flushing under pressure and fluid flow removes any deposits (scales formed by precipitation or corrosion byproducts) inside the tiny crevices of a radiator and elsewhere in the coolant system. A simple drain and fill without the assistance of pressure and flow may not dislodge and remove the tiny deposits that inevitably begin to form. However, if you have been changing the fluids regularly and are experiencing no problems, a simple drain and fill may be sufficient.
