Diy - Maf Sensor Cleaning
MAF cleaning on N55 with pictures
can be with any MAF Sensor on bimmer too ( N52 MAF ) Tools: - torx screw (torx25) - flat head screw driver and a bottle of Mass Air Flow Cleaner Install time: 15-45min pretty easy DIY but BECAREFUL of the sensor - this part is expensive. *Like any DIY this is at ur own risk members. FIG 1: Pop those clips off the intake box FIG 2: different angle, pop em off there are 4 clips. then lift the lid high and pull off - put a little muscle into it. u'll see how the back of lid locks on - just remeber that when putting back on. FIG 3: you want to use a mini flat head screw driver, pull the sensor plug out. then lift the intake lid and unscrew the 2 bolts with torx wrench. THEN CAREFULLY wiggle off the MAF sensor - and pull it out. DONT TOUCH the electronic insides only spray it. FIG 4: Spray the electronics shake off any excess juice - let it air dry. takes a few seconds. FIG 5: 4-10hp if u chit is dirty it'll make a big difference. they say clean the MAF sensor every time u change the air filter. FIG 6: check to make sure the sensor is dry. then put it all back. congrats ur MAF Sensor is clean.

Dirty Maf equals inaccurate reading of air,
results in poor gas mileage and performance. clean'n will optimize the sensor - any built up residue would be gone.

Because of the cost of new MAF, this DIY is not worth the risk/time.
Relates back to the old quote, "If it's not broken, fix it 'till it is."

But how would you know if you need to clean it? I recently replaced my intake filter and its already dirty as hell! Should I clean it when I clean my filter?

Most times this will become an issue is with oiled filter elements and a user that doesn't know how to properly re-oil the element, resulting is an oil soaked filter that transfers the oil to the MAF.
I typically clean mine 1X/year regardless using the CRC in all my cars. Been doing it since the year 2000 & haven't ruined a MAF sensor yet CRC MAF Cleaner is only product that should be used - do not use any other type of solvents, or alcohol, as they leave a residue of their own on the MAF wire in the process of drying, & NEVER actually touch the MAF wire with anything such as cloth, fingers, etc. Same idea as Electrical Contact Cleaner that has been used in industry since forever - cleans electrical items without actual physical contact & leaves no harmful residue.
