help a newb with rear brakes

i started experiencing the squeal on my rear brake. only after i release the brake and let the car cruise forward.

based on some of the forum searches, i probably need new pad and new sensor?

i took off my wheel today to check the pad, the pad looks to still have some meat on it (5.7mm). do i still need to replace it?

the pad was gripping the rotor, there is no gap. wtf? is that the way the pad should sit? the car was parked and i didn't engage hand brake.

i'm attaching the pic of the pad and how it sits.

please help answer my questions! much appreciated.

Wow. It looks like you have absolutely no or very little pad material left. What I see rubbing on the rotor is the backing plate to the brake pad. Judging by what I see, I'm not even certain the car is very safe to drive. How far away is your dealer/shop?

so... do i replace them? keep them? what do i do?
it doesn't squeal all the time, just at times... maybe when it's warm.
i've been looking for a reason to switch to cool carbon pads lol, but i hate to just waste money if i don't need it yet.

Very sorry. I thought the pad was a reflection on the rotor! It looks like you have 5mm to 6mm left, maybe? So there is no rush to replace them. FYI, I replace mine @ 3mm. I don't know your driving habits but I agree with poster above, 5-7k left or so. Sorry again, also apologize for slow response.

No worries. Honest mistake, at least you were concerned for my safety lol.

Thanks all for the advice.

+1 I thought the same when I first saw the photo.

If you have time, open it up and grease the back of the pads with anti-squeal. Worked for me. Paste I'd recommend you can get from BMW @ $1 per wheel.
