Italian tune up, How to???

Do you perform Italian tune ups on your diesel and if so how do you do it and how often, I have heard get engine warm and do a few redline runs, or drive it at redline for minutes on end which is kind of hard in our cars at 155mph, any ideas on how you do it and do you believe it works...

Their is a huge write up on the TDI forum and how it is a trick used by Ferrari to clean CBU from its race street cars... says do it right before an oil change because some of the carbon will go to the oil pan, so its best to do, then change...

I've never subscribed to the full on torturing of the machinery on public streets but I do believe in pushing the machinery hard from time to time just to shake off the cobwebs.

I also attest that my D seemed to run the strongest after I did a local autocross. I'd imagine the elevated boost pressures helped to blow any gunk outta the intake and also the event helped to restore more sporty throttle / trans adaptions.

Then again, it could all just be a placebo affect.

The word "Italian" with anything related to maintenance doesn't quite give me the greatest confidence in this method...

definitely DONT run it at redline for long periods of time.

I have had success on other cars with getting it warm and then revving way out a couple times, usually just first and/or second gear so you arent going super fast. This worked on piston top carbon deposits though, not intake deposits.
