Hey man I'm about to take my car in for this. At my local german auto shop, they say this is typically the accessory belt tensioner going bad. Under pressure if loose the steering will shudder - like when manuvering out of a parking spot. This belt tensioner may be called something else, though it is the one for the steering for sure.
I'll update if I get it corrected. PB

So how do you guys know you have the EXACT same problem?

Because IMO, sound description is subjective. Like a grunting/grinding sound can be the same as a gunk gunk sound, with the difference being word choices.

I'm also experiencing some issues/sounds coming from what seem to be my power steering unit.......It also happens when manuvering at very slow speeds, especially when turning from a slow roll/stop. But it sounds like a 'gunk gunk' sound more so than a shudder sound, to me.

So I've researched a lot regarding this issue, and I've read that it can be anything from simply changing out the PS fluid, to a failed power steering pump, but never heard it to be the belt tensioner, or whatever that's called.....Just do a search and you'll know/see what I mean.

I have what sounds like the same problem... and I mentioned it to the dealer several times. At random times its worse than others and almost seems like the engine is going to stall. I was worried about it, even thought it might be related to carbon build up causing a weaker idle and requiring more compensation, until I drove a brand new e90 328i and experienced pretty much the same thing in it.

I'll also have experienced this in my 2008 335 e90. Mostly after I back out of driveway/parking spot then I shift into 1st (from Reverse) and if I turn the wheel to straighten out before giving it some gas and dropping the clutch i get the shutter. It seems like I can feel the sensation in the stearing wheel more than I can hear anything.

I've been contemplating a dealer visit for this, but wasn't sure if it's just normal. I also thought it could be related to reduced power at idle and an increased load from the power stearing pump since it usually deminishes as soon as I give it some gas for engaging the clutch.

Exactly the same as mine. Just got a call. It turns out there was a service bulletin issued a while ago. They are replacing another hose.

Did they give you the Service Bulletin number? I'd like to look into this.

Thanks!

I'd like to know the bulletin also. The shudder happens when I reverse and steer to get aligned. I always thought it was because of my car being lowered. If the dealer finds out what are the common issues please list.

1. PS fluid
2. Belts
3. Build up
4. Rods
5. etc.

So prior to replacing parts, did the dealership try flushing the PS fluid?

So the pump wasn't the culprit then?

Keep us posted!!

I'm sure they tried everything. Waiting for BMW authorization to do the rack now. They've had it all week...and now the weekend. This car has spent more time at the dealership for this problem alone than my last 3 Audis combined.

This might be a reoccurring problem for us '06's and onwards from now on. BMW better stock up on these parts now.

Flushing the PS fluid was my first thought as well.

Not exactly pertinent to a BMW, but a buddy of mine bought a '64 Studebaker GT Hawk that'd been sitting a while. It ran and drove but the power steering was damn near nonexistent, and when it did work, it felt "notchy" like the OP describes (but probably more so.) We unhooked the return line from the P/S pump reservoir and stuck it in a bucket and ran the engine while pouring ATF in the reservoir and sawing the wheel back and forth. Did that until the fluid was nice and pink and then some for insurance, reconnected hoses, topped up and worked the wheel back and forth a couple more times with the engine running to get the air out. Worked fantastically after that!

Mine only acts up occasionally while parking. Yes they checked it.

They 'checked' it meaning they looked to see if the PS fluid was topped off? Or that they actually did a flush?

Also, don't assume that the dealership did the flush, look on the service receipt or ask the SA. You really can't trust the dealership too much. Just because they're a dealership, doesn't mean they ALL know about the inner workings of BMWs. Heck, I'm willing to bet that some enthusiasts on the forums are more knowledgeable than some certified BMW techs, to be honest.
