OP said he only cares about sound, that's it....If we're talking about performance, then yes, it's not comparing apple to apple.

The PE isn't a catback right? Not really comparing apples to apples.

I will be switching from PE to Vanguard next week probably... will post up what I think.

Anybody know if changing the tips on my Vanguard will change the tone and deepness slightly?

I just got the BMW PE. Its the most refined exhaust if you are looking for something that isn't too loud or too quiet. It is a little louder in lower RPMs but not much. Where it really sings is past 3k.

I'm still very undecided on which exhaust I like better... having a REAL tough time making the call haha, I will update you OP once I make the final call.

I'm going to try throwing the downpipes on with the Vanguard and seeing how big of a change it makes.

OP should try and find some locals to hear the exhausts. So much of it is personal opinion. I've never heard the Vanguard, I'm sure it's nice. I have the BMW PE and if I could only have 1 mod it would be it. Might sound like crazy talk but it really is that good. Plus you hear it from the minute you start the car until you shut it off. Considering most driving is day-to-day stop light to stop light, things like suspension and even tunes are often rendered mute.

I went with the Vanguard because I'm all about performance, and wanted my car to be a true stage 3 with FBO.

So if you don't care about the gains of 10 hp, then I'd go with Dinan....go with Vanguard if you want the extra horses....it gurgles and pops at lower rpms and downshifts, screams like a sport bike when you let her rip....just my .02.
i love the PE's tips. It makes me angry that 80% of the catbacks for this application have angled tips. which remind me of something that belongs on a fox body mustang or something similar. straight cut single wall tips look best to me on this car.

I've been told the Vanguard is real raspy at high rpm with catless dp's. But I'm still debating getting it, but holding out on VRSF 'Race' exhaust.

Wow - really???? REALLY?? Please feel free to elaborate, I am really looking forward to this mod but I didn't think that an exhaust can be that good (change your experience of the car like a tune does). And I drive a convertible so it'll be much more noticeable.

I wouldn't go with Vanguard. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641075

I've got the BMW PE, ar see through DPs, and factory e82 midpipe.

With the canflap permanently open, this exhaust made all kinda of interesting noises. On decel if I jabbed the throttle while in gear, It'd gurgle and spit and grumble. Almost reminded me of one of my v8's which also loved to gurgle on decel.

It was rather prone to drone at low rpm/cruise and cold starts were silly loud.

With the canflap enabled, the gurgle on decel is gone, low rpm drone is gone, and I'm willing to trade less drone for no gurgling.

I'm happy with the exhaust where it is now, and have little desire to change it.

Source: I'm a grumpy old man and hate noisy exhausts when you're just puttering around town at 2.5k rpm.

That link about Vanguard being raspy is not definitive. I have the Vanguard V2 and it doesn't rasp AT ALL with a catless downpipe (N55, but no matter, exact same exhaust).

I work for a dealership and hear the PE all the time. It just sound unrefined to me and the tips look like muffler shop tips.

If exotic is what you want, Vanguard is the exhaust for you. I love how it gurgles and pops on throttle lift, and once it comes off (a somewhat annoyingly loud) cold start, the idle sound is super deep and exotic (not tinny like the PE). The Vanguard howls like a Ferrari in the 3k-6k range.

Be warned though, the Vanguard definitely gets louder as it gets older. My whole house shakes in the morning when I cold start it in the garage.

Winters are not as fun... the Vanguard does have a bit of cabin noise at 1800-2000rpm and cruising with the windows up (especially if you're catless). But nothing beats that sexy sound of cruising in the summer with the windows down!
