used redline in my trans (manual) and diff ... very happy. Beware, you are going will need to suck out the fluid from the diff (no drain plug). I purchased a tool from harbor freight that worked great.

What weight does the gear oil need to be? And any other requirements for it that am missing?

What type of diff? U should really ask the diff company what they recommend to use..the wrong oil will cause LSD noise

gear type diff _ redline is really good but u have different weight 75W90 75W140..

clutch type _ use what the manufactuer recommends

BMW recommends Castrol SAF XO
Mike Miller (Roundel Techtalk guy) uses and recommends RedLine 75W-90 synthetic gear oil

These are for our normal open differentials that are stock on our cars. If you have a different diff, ask the manufacturer.

Its the stock diff, yeah heard the castrol is good, thats what the M cars use

I fell for the whole "lifetime fill" nonsense. I blew a diff at 90k. I would still have it had I changed the fluid. Does anyone have a part number for the stock diff fluid? I can't find it for the life of me.

the stock fluid is castrol SAF -XO, i was thinking about using mobil 1 any other suggestions?

I cant figure out what weight the stock fluid is 75w90 or 75w140? Any one know?

After 5 and a half years and 50k miles both the diff and manual transmission fluid was black.

I will post a picture of it as time permits.

Will do this every 25k miles now that I know how ugly it gets.

Other than the colour, can you comment on the oil's viscosity and fluidity? Were there any noticeable metal flakes or oil chunks?

I'm at 47k and will be changing out both the AT and differential oil very soon. Will buy the OEM stuff from a Land Rover dealer, then use Gold Plug's metallic plugs.

Ended up getting the fluids changed yesterday at the dealership while I had it in getting the final warranty inspection and minor maintenance done.

I kept the old fluid, will run a magnet through it and see what it picks up as time permits.

The Diff fluid isn't that bad after looking at it closely, these pictures were taken with a 50W halogen light shining through the fluid in an 8" circumference cylinder:

Thanks! The transmission oil does look solid black, but the diff oil looks surprisingly clean (unless I'm looking at it wrong). Please keep us updated on how much the magnet manages to pick up in both oil.

It is clean but a bit dark like 1 year old brake fluid. The Transmission fluid is pitch black. Yes will post magnet results when I have them.

Nice. I guess the open differential is less harsh on the oil than LSD. Is it safe to say that the diff oil can last another 50k miles (total 100k miles)? If so, then that's one less headache in terms of maintenance for our cars

I changed my diff fluid out at 35k with Redline 75W90...the fluid that came out of the diff was very clean....and I have about 4 track days on it and drive it hard in the mountains all the time in the summer.
