Engine Malfunction Fault

Hey guys. Just got this as I was driving and told "reduced power drive to BMW center." Sorry for the crappy pic as I was driving when I took it:

Any ideas?

Thanks.

That would appear to be "limp mode" turn the car off and restart it may clear itself....otherwise use a reset tool if you have one (and see if it happens again)....or off to the dealer

Had many of those with JBD before. Could be related to a few things. Fueling comes first to mind. Pull the code to see.

I was actually in a traffic jam guys on the highway barely moving for a half hour when it came on. I'm eating at a restaurant now and plan to take the non-highway route on the way back home to see if it comes on again.

Weird guys. After having dinner I left and drove 80km on the highway to visit my nieces and it never came back on.

If you can, check and see if a code was stored (as NRG mentioned). That will be the best way to start figuring this out. The circumstance in which it occurred (stop and go for an extended period) might be a hint, but the code is the best place to start.

I did but I don't think it's configured right. I live in Canada and we use kilometers instead of miles. My speedometer needle was literally swinging all the way around to hit my fuel gauge one.

I have the Burger tuning CT one.

You need to calibrate and save the setting for CT based on our KMH speedo. Follow the user-guide on Terry's site to configure the CT. It's tricky, I know... That's why I bough the BT cable now for the second time from him.

Thanks NRG!

I pulled these codes:

46B7
46A7

4C18

After googling the first two, I got "swirl flap actuator" for it

No luck on the last code. Hopefully someone can help.

P.S. Would the "swirl flap actuator" be enough to cause my "engine malfunction/reduced power" message? Also, would it be something that they would have touched/altered under the most recent recall?

Good thing I bought the extended warranty last month.

GBD, sent you a pm. I *think* the swirl flap code is worthy of a dealer visit sooner rather than later.

Hopefully this is painless tomorrow and I don't snap at the dealership. Taking it to Parkview BMW near my gym.

Just an update. Taking the car in at 7:45am tomorrow morning to deal with this "swirl flap actuator" garbage.

So the diagnosis was correct about the "swirl flap actuator" being the problem. The SA says their technician found "30 fault triggers" but since I'm under "Coverage One" they need to bring in an adjuster. I told the SA "why even bother because it will be covered?" and he agreed but said it's "protocol" for them. Also mentioned parts might be "gummed" up in the air intake manifold and it might have to be replaced.

Apparently the adjuster takes 24-48 hours to show up so I'm in the process of getting a loaner.

I agree with your thought on the 'adjuster' - that just seems to be a way for BMW to attempt to weasel out of coverage. I hope they do right by you and get your car squared away soon.

Very true DD. The SA told me one way or another that I will get a new manifold. He said it costs $1,100 and that the dealership will honour it even if the adjuster doesn't.

Funniest part was them having no loaners until 2pm today so they got me a Chevy Malibu from Enterprise car rental.

So I heard nothing about my car today and decided to call my SA. Got his voice mail saying he's off today and back tomorrow. I called the dealership and the receptionist told me my car was ready and that I could come in. I go in and another SA tells me that while my car is ready, he can't release it because he's still awaiting a claim number for it.

I actually stayed calm.

Congrats on staying calm. I would have told them a claim number has nothing to do with me. That's your problem...keys please.

I hear you man and I would have surely done that if it was a far drive for me. I'm only 10 minutes away from Parkview and in a good mood when I went in.
