If I were you guys I would let BMW USA know what is going on. That's part of how they find out about these things.

Hooray n finally! I could definitely get this fixed, have not repaired mine since it is an intermittent issue. Good for those who really need this.

Hope BMW will not refuse to repair this and say my car is not affected...

ppl asking "why not sport seats?". Please read:

"BMW is recalling certain model year blah-blah-blah vehicles, equipped with certain seat types"

Please read further:

"Additionally, owners of model year 2006-2007 3 Series with standard seats, blah-blah.. will receive an extended warranty on their front passenger seat occupant detection mat."

Clearly sport seats are covered.

Same here but mine is not messing up.

Same here but mine is not messing up.
I am more worried it will come out worse than when it went
in. The first day I bought the car is errored once and has not
done it since which has been about 3 or 4 years now.

My mat sensor apparently failed this weekend.

Interesting, I have a E91 built in 2007 but it's a 2008 and it has the sport seats.

I have an E91, 2008, build date 2/2008, with sport seats, and I have the failed mat sensor. I've spoken to both the dealer and BMW NA (twice) and everyone claims that this recall only goes through the 2007 model year. Which stinks as this is an $800 fix (mostly labor). From the looks of things, it appears that "eventually" BMW will extend the recall or issue another one to cover the 2008 model year since it's pretty clear that the same part is used in all of the pre-LCI cars.

That means that if I pay the dealer $800 now to fix the problem, and eventually the recall is extended, I'd get reimbursed by BMW. But I'd have to essentially give them my money to hold until they do extend. Alternatively, I could just DIY ... the part is about $150 ... but I'd have the annoyance of tearing my seat apart AND there's less of a chance that BMW would reimburse me for the part if the recall is extended. Of course, under no circumstance would they reimburse me for my time spent doing the repair if I DIY.

But all I know right now is that every time someone sits in the passenger seat, the airbag and un-fastened seatbelt warning lights go off...and then about 75% of the time, after the passenger scoots around a bit the airbag warning light goes off (but the seatbelt light stays on). This is more than a bit disconcerting so far as knowing if I have a functioning airbag system or not. So basically, I probably should get it fixed/spend the weekend doing it myself.

An important safety system like the airbag shouldn't fail this early in a car's life. Ugh.

It's interesting that yours was built after mine and in 2008. The E91 could be significant because they are built in a different factory and since the E91 is the rarest of the "normal" E9x line in the US, and I wouldn't be surprised if their parts inventory was stale compared to other models. (Or they might just never have actually identified and fixed the problem.)

The passenger seat mat failure is apparently very common on other BMWs including the E46. This is enough of a problem that there are YouTube videos on how to bypass the circuit with a few $ of Radio Shack parts and vendors even sell a plug in module for the E9x on E-Bay to do this!

Mine has failed in the opposite mode of yours. I hear the annoying chime warning and red icon without anyone in the seat (or anything on the seat). I have the BMW extended warranty, and the dealer techs must be getting really good at this with the recall, so we'll see how it goes.

Have you filed a complaint with NHTSA? https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/

Normally I don't suggest running to the gov't with little problems, but it's a safety item, seems to be pretty common, and it's really something that BMW should step up to the plate and deal with.

BMW needs to look at expanding this. My wife has a 2009 328i and the mat is on order for hers. I'm glad I bought the extended warranty cause when I said something to them they said it couldn't be covered under the recall.... even though it's the exact same thing.

I replaced the sensor myself (approximately a four hour task) and later received this recall notice. Fortunately, BMW have promised to reimburse me for the cost of the part. They also told me that if I had paid an independent shop to perform the service, that cost would have been covered as well! I am impressed.

Wolfgang -- Did you follow an online DIY? If so, do you have a link you can share?

I've looked around and have found some Youtube videos and I think a DIY on this site, but they're actually for a slightly different (non E90/91) model than what I have.

My biggest concern is getting the seat cover re-installed properly. I'd hate to take apart the seat and then have it look not-so-good when I re-install the cushion and cover.

Hi Jsunma,

Sorry I do not have a link. The only place that I know of to obtain complete information for this repair is the Technische Information System (TIS). As for the upholstery, do not worry -- as long as you have some patience and follow the instructions the seat cover should come out looking good as new. Good luck!

Well my steering wheel lock is bad so I called them

Well my steering wheel lock is bad so I called them
and while I was on the phone asked about the seat sensor
recall . I was told the parts will be available at the end of the
week and they would start scheduling then. This is BMW of Monteray
don't know about the rest of the country or world.

So 1339 for a new wheel lock which means replacing the upper
steering column. I think this should be recall to as much as it happens
and it the Fxxking steering. A little more critical than and air
bag don't you think.
Yes i saw the DIY on it.

Interesting - did a search as I have a 2006 330i sport/premium pre-Sept build and the light went on just yesterday.

I don't think I got a letter from BMW though - but I've become accustomed to throwing out the junk they send me, but the times I have gotten recall notices, they've been... noticeable.
