Cruise Control - ABS problem?
Hi Folks,
Few weeks ago leaving work an orange warning light was displayed on my dash followed by a car up on a ramp. Not sure what to make of it I drove on and slipped onto the dual carraigeway where I hit the cruise control but got different symbols and it wouldn't come on. After a few days brought it to my mechanic, he put it on his computer and reckoned it was the ABS unit. First he suggested a repair kit, but later found it it wasn't available for the car, then he suggested refurbishing the current unit. So he did that, got it back and the fault came back again, set the ABS unit off again, came back and did the same thing. He told me it works fine until the car is turned off and on again. At this stage the only real option if I want cruise control back and to get rid of the lights seems to be spending £1600 for the part off BMW? Any thoughts? |

You neeed to have a clear diagnostic check undertaken which will identify the fault codes. The fault may well be due to a defective ABS pump in which case ECU Testing can usually fix for £250. For 6 cylinder engines the BMW official fix is a new pump etc at nearly 2k. Ridiculous since this fault is one of the most common and affects numerous makes of car using ATE Teves ABS pumps. There are numerous comprehensive posts on this subject.

Your car will work fine…
BUT: Not only will your Cruise Control not work, you won't have DTC nor ABS. Given the apocalyptic weather forecast by the Daily Mail for this winter, you should look at getting this fixed ASAP Options: 1. Whinge at BMW and get probably get nowhere 2. send off for refurb, which means taking out of the car, and having to replace it, along with fluids 3. Get the kit: No go as it's not compatible 4. And this is what I did, as I couldn't be without the car: Buy another pump off ebay from a reclaimers that has a money back guarantee. Take the pump off. Take the black control unit off the old pump and attach to replacement pump and then re-install. A bit risky, I'll grant you, as the issue may come back, but I managed to get mine fixed, inc part, for £200 all in. This will also save you having to recode the control unit Hope that helps |

1. wont work, 2. I have done, 3. I'm reluctant to do and 4. I don't like the idea of doing.
My mechanic got speaking to a friend of his and he recommended another company that specialises in fixing ABS. They want £850+VAT and guarantee it will work. This is vs the inital company who wanted £130 but didn't get it working after two tries. Tempted to bring to a stealer and get a Fiesta ST3. Car has almost 75k miles and is probably due a turbo soon? |

I had this done. The bill was around 1500, but was picked up by warranty.
Mine went randomly after I had a flat tyre. I think the constant loss of rotation confused the DSC unit to the point it just did not function any more. The codes said replace unit and pump, so BMW did just that, but the BMW tech did say to me that the DSC unit had just got in some weird pickle, beyond what he could diagnose personally. There is no harm in not getting it done, but I found the stability of the car is pretty without the DSC functioning. It is akin to holding down the DTC button, and the road takes you where it wants all the time. |

What I said. Without codes it is guesswork and potentially very costly. If the codes prove the abs unit is faulty then ECU Testing appear to have the best track record.
