Performance Package BMW 325i N53.
Hi,
I've got a 325i with a 3.0L N53 engine. I'm toying with the idea of getting the variable length intake manifold and ECU remap. By all accounts that would ramp up performance from 218hp and 270Nm, to 272hp and 320Nm. That seems like an impressive jump. • Is it worth it? • Should any other changes be made? • Does it result in excessive wear and tear? • BMW warranty down the pan? • Insurance? Its £1,400 fitted but I guess a chunk of that is for the air intake manifold. Could I just pick one up from a scrap yard? How much would the air intake manifold cost vs the remap? http://mosselmanturbo.co.uk/remappin...25i-e90-218hp/ Thanks. |

Thats a fair jump in performance, you need someone to have driven both to explain the difference. Although why dont you test drive a 330i and see the difference yourself? I cant see any excessive wear and tear happening as it will basically just be the 330i setup. Warranty aswell as insurance would obviously be affected - if they notice.

Did you go through with the upgrade in the end? I'm thinking about this package for my car as well. Cheers, M |

I have a N53 330i they are great....
I remember a few years back I had a 1999 E36 328 Sport with the 193bhp strangled engine. 1bhp more than the 325i. I got a modified 325i manifold & a remap which took it to 220-230bhp. The difference above 4000rpm was amazing. The downside was the engine felt lest torquey but I think this was relative. Even back then it was about £800 for both and that was based on a second hand manifold as a starting point. Not sure if the N53 325i feels strangled from the factory? |

Finally got round to getting the Mosselman Performance Package fitted. The difference is significant. Better throttle response and a significant difference in acceleration from 3,000 RPM. A noticeable faster jump to higher revs as well. Fuel consumption on the mway driving home was just over 50mpg, so if anything better fuel consumption than pre-tuned and certainly no worse off mway. Very happy.

Interesting. Was it worth £1,400?

With a BMW warranty, anything not fitted as standard when the car was manufactured will invalidate the warranty. That said, BMW confirmed to me that wheels would not make any difference as they are not covered by teh warranty anyway.

Are you sure? As far as I know the only difference between a 325i and 330i is the inlet manifold and mapping. The manifold is changed as part of the upgrade. The 325i was restricted to get it under a German tax band. I asked BMW and they confirmed but would not do the work.

I asked my BMW dealer how it would impact the warranty and they said it would only impact anything directly impacted by the mod. That said I did not bother renewing the warranty as there is not much left on my car that is standard.

Subjective. I was going to get an M3, but decided it was too much money to be sitting on my drive devaluing as I don't do a lot of miles. I decided to go for a remap instead. In that context it was significantly cheaper and the car is more than fast enough for me. I don't normally drive fast, but its nice to get some g force now and then.

I was seriously considering this. Did you get it fitted by M Style?
Was the 330 inlet manifold new or sourced? Did they run your car on a dyno? What's the pull like in 1st and 2nd? What mileage is your 325 at? So tempted... Might try and find a 330i to test drive. |

My mileage is 48K (09)
The manifold is supplied as part of the upgrade. The big difference between manifolds is that the replacement is a variable length intake, which is what the 330i has. I don’t know if you could source the manifold separately to the remap. It was fitted by MStyle and took most of the day. It was not checked on a dyno, but no need really as you only have to drive the car to see a savage difference in performance. You will notice a difference in all gears and across all revs. I did not bother getting the iMoss tool to be able to switch between stocks and tuned. MStyle will remap once for free if it is reset by accident (BMW software update). After that you have to pay. Don’t know how much it would cost, but should not be much. http://mosselmanturbo.co.uk/remappin...25i-e90-218hp/ Performance Package BMW 325i N53, This spectacular performance package is available for the 3.0L N53 engine. This engine is found in the 325i from 2008. This performance package comes with a variable length intake manifold, and a special ECU remap that releases the hidden power of your 325i, with 218hp and 270Nm, to 330i specifications,272hp and 320Nm!! In the dyno sheet you can see that the tuned line is less flat than the original. This is the variable length intake that is opening the first valve around 3250 rpm and the second valve around 4500 rpm, changing pulsation exactly like the stock 330i. In the car this feels actually positive, as the engine has more character building his power more aggressive in the rpm range that you use most. So your car is getting more exciting to drive! |

BTW, be aware that you now have the dreaded swirl flaps, so keep your eye out for them failing and destroying your engine!

Maybe I used the wrong term. As I understand it, the 330i manifold uses DISA flaps/valves which can fail. See this thread:

I wish this was better priced, £1400 is just to high a sum for me to justify it. I am sure it is awesome though, and in terms of pure power increase, it is "worth it" in terms of £/bhp.

The DISA valves that have been installed in your car are original BMW. The failures that you have heard about are on the 3.0L diesel engine (swirl flaps), so there are no worries for your engine. Unrelated to my intake sadly: |

Sorry, but the link I included in post #15 relates to petrol not diesel engines.
Yes, diesel DISAs are also an issue, but so are petrol...

I did this conversion on my car 325xi N53 engine and it feels great.
I also have the the performance intake, performance silencer and supersprint front pipes.
