335i muffler in detail

So yesterday,I and a friend of mine decided to use the spare time to look inside the 335i muffler

We carefully unmounted the whole exhaust up to the pipes that lead to the downpipes.
Then we cut it open and well,it was quite suprising how simple the muffler was constructed.
But one thing was quite weird...
In the left muffler, there is a small section that looks like a cat.
So we looked through the exhaust tips using a flashlight and found catalytic material inside as well as any insulating material if it was used as a small extra muffler.
So what is this thing good for?
Another thing I was wondering is : what is the connecting pipe between the two seperate mufflers good for?
Maybe to get a better flow if one muffler seems to "clog" or has a less good exhaust stream flow..

here are some pics to see what I`m talkin about

Yes,the last 2 pics are actually someone else`s pics.
Since I didn`t take any of the left muffler part I simply took those 2 pics from his thread.

woahh, dissecting muffler?? I think the cat on left side helps with emission when car is cold, because only left side is open when cold, and to help cat get hot faster. now dissect the motor and see what do you find interesting there? lol

do you really think it`s a cat?

We looked inside the left tip with a flashlight and did not see any material inside

I read somewhere that the connecting pipe is acting as a resonator..
is that correct?

Does the E93 have a resonator before the muffler section?

The connecting pipe is basically an integrated "H-Pipe". Designed to cancel out certain unwanted frequencies in a factory car.

The left exhaust tip get's closed off by the exhaust flap. The exhaust in that pipe needs to have somewhere to go, so they route it over to the other side.

it cant be a cat any ways. its too far down the exhaust stream to ever get hot enough. its just something to keep it quieter.....

i think what you said is a resonator is actually just a Y pipe. if you found catalytic material in the drivers side muffler, chances are, its a cat. the exhaust flap closes to heat it up and opens when youre on throttle.

upstream to the Y pipe are the secondary cats and the primary cats are in the downpipe upstream to that.

ok thanks

so my idea is to make straight pipes from the downpipes by cutting out the secondary cats and replacing them by 2 pipes and then in the muffler I would have to close the bypass pipes with a metal plate on each side and for the left muffler I`ll have to replace the small muffler inside by a single pipe.
This way the german cops should not be able to see that I have no mufflers and I still can drive with straight pipes

is that correct?

Thanks guys,I really appreciate your input!

you may even be able to pick up more power without that y-pipe, since youre already taking stuff out.

good luck, i hope it sounds to your likeing when its all done

E93 has exact the same exhaust as E92.
The E90 has a resonator in the X pipe, so it is less loud.

The passenger side muffler contains big resonator so it is quiet.
The drivers side muffler contains this kind of cat, in fact it is a small resonator that gives the nice sound when the flap is open.

I whould subjest only to remove the rock wool inside the mufflers, and close them.
It should give a nice sound
