indie shop or dealer for steering repair?

I have already struck out at the only euro shop within 20 miles. My car is making a clicking sound when steering at slow speeds, louder outside. Local shop replaced front control arms but did nothing for noise(and caused other problems).

The closest dealer is Ocala BMW then Fields would be about 15 min further. I want it fixed correct but I don't want to over pay. My 3rd party warranty covers pretty much everything but the diagnostic fee and possible alignment. I would prefer for the shop to use oem parts as well as have onsite or near rental car, I do not believe that is much to ask for but most shops around here are pretty poor.

honestly the dealer is always the best choice when it comes to this stuff. Seems like you are already over-paying with the headache by not having the problem solved the first time around.

Most BMW dealers will take back the diagnostic fee if the warranty company and yourself do the job there. Alignment would be out of pocket if needed. And you can always tell your shop to order OEM parts. You can buy them all over the internet these days. I sell them OEM parts myself online.

Ses light came on again...dropped it off at the closest dealer. Hopefully it's quick and actually fixes the problem(crazy expectations I know)

Well, got a call from sa today and they are having trouble replicating sound enough to diag steering. I gave him some tips on how to make sound but I'm not holding my breath. Had a golf when in college 8 years ago that took 5 shops to diag noise in the back suspension.

ok, ocala bmw says clicking is pressure release solenoid when at full lock and normal. I do not believe this to be the case. Check engine light was o2 sensor post cat.

is it normal for dealer to charge a "shop supplie fee" of $20/hour? I am aware of shop supply fees but that seemed a bit high. also they charged shipping for the 02 sensor. I can't say I have ever paid for shipping before... if its normal then i will shut up and move on.

I've never heard of a service center charging shipping, unless it was not a stocked item (2-3 days in most cases to order standard stock order) so you had them overnight, as most dealers charge 10% of retail for shipping.

Shop supplies can vary from place to place, we normally are 7% or highest of $20, unless any fabrication has been done then we charge additional.

If you have questions just ask your SA, if it doesn't sound right with you run it by the SM and see what he has to say.

Good luck

I'm 100% convinced it is not a relay and is not normal.

Relay or pressure release solenoid. I got a follow up call and told them things didn't seem right. Also had a local front end shop check it out. They thought it was in the steering colum. I spoke with the SM and he was going to call right back, never did.

Take it to BMW of Ocala and speak with David. He's the service manager for Porsche, VW, and BMW. Awesome guy, surprised he hasn't chimed in on this yet. Tell him Mike sent ya.
