any car with dedicated summer tires will be slipping and sliding around like crazy..........traction will be at a minimum and any incline or corner will be an adventure......

I had my 162's on the car and couldnt get out of my parking spot in front of my aparment. That night I bought a $23 hydrolic jack along with a breaking bar and changed the wheels out into the lot. Then it was just like summer, except more fun when it snows...
Current wheels are winter wheels (info in sig).

just set aside some money and buy a set of winter wheels and snow tires...
mine were less than 1000 shipped, but that was for 16's the 330 needs 17's so they'll be just a little more. I just built a set at tirerack.com... dunlop runflat snow tires and a set of decent looking 17" wheels $1104 + shipping... |

The obvious is that the tires are not good for snow/ice. So you need snow tires. Also remember that the suspension is lowered in the 330i SP, so you could end up plowing snow with your front bumper if you drive in deep snow. This is not a problem with the 330xi SP since it is not lowered.

With the stock sport summer tires? Forget it man, unless you want to @$*(@ up your car or yourself. There is zero traction in the snow or ice.
Get some winter tires.

I'm in Chicago, and anything over a 1/2" of snow and you would gladly hand over 2,000 dollars if need be to get snow tires put on at that moment. However, I have a beater that I drive when it snows, but Chicago is good at plowing all the streets as soon as it starts snowing, and its not bad driving the e90 then. Good luck getting out of your garage, or a parking lot without them though! Oh yeah, as soon as I took the car out of the delivery center in Germany (it was snowing at the time), I spun out of the holding garage and hit the curb. Luckly, I hit the back rear tire instead of the side, where I could have damaged the wheel. Do yourself a favor, and listen to the others when they tell you that you HAVE TO get another set of tires. I'd hate to see pictures of your wrecked car.

Good question
Today I had to park like 5 minutes away from my job b/c I could not get into our parking lot. Unlike a lot of people on this site. My 330i was a sacrifice. I went downrange (Iraq) Almost died. So I started saving money. Made it back home and blew it on a 330i. I might as well enjoy it before I go back to Iraq. On my budget, a set of good winter tires means that I have to safe some more. I don't know if anybody here is or has been in the military. SGT's pay kind of sucks. Well, anyway back to the question. 330i w/Sport Package sucks in the snow!!!!!

How bad is 330i SPORT package on snow?
Wait a minute, regardless of tires. Best in snow; all wheel drive. Second best in snow; front wheel drive. Worst in snow; rear wheel drive. That's the facts. All wheel drive is best in all adverse conditions.

I dont agree with your assesment. I think you need to include tires because most people who have AWD use all seasons as these are the cars that line the ditches on the side of the roads when it snows . Those who have RWD use snows and drive to the conditions and laugh at the AWD's in the ditches.
For most areas id take RWD with snows so you can get the most performance out of the car. Andy

Horrible. And it doesn't matter weather you have sport package or not. Summer tyres have no grip on snow or ice.
I had a very scary experience with summer tires this winter...

I would take an all wheel drive car with all season tires over a rear wheel drive car with snow tires ANY DAY. The rear end of the BMW is just too light.

Also, my 318ti with Blizzaks is signifcantly better than my old FWD Escort w/ all-seasons. Much better traction and controlability. Both of these cars sit quite low and in 10+ years of driving in Minnesota/Wisconsin winters, I have have never gotten stuck in the snow. I don't think the sterotype that rear wheel is bad in the snow carries much weight anymore. If you compare an old american RWD beast (where the stigma came from) with a modern BMW, it a whole different ball game. Your looking at 50/50 balance, compared to maybe 70/30?? with those huge cast iron V8s. Amazing modern independant rears, versus solid axles help keep the rear planted. Traction control/stability control. Modern tires..... |
