Saw the vid - if that's a stock 330d then it can certainly shift! I very much doubt that you would be missing anything over a 330i - except perhaps the engine tone.

Just came accross the thread. Its quite boring in reality actually, When I did this. I had the better start with the better traction so I was around 1 car length ahead, then were both locked in place 50mph onwards. Stayed that way.
Had the 330d have been a mapped car, im sure he would have smoked me. End of. 330i revs to around 7k. Yes the delivery is designed to provide more torque higher up the rev range, and it is very civil unless you do thrash it. Carlos.. no mate its nothing like the E46 M3 at all. NO NO NO |

90% of M3 drivers have no idea how to maximise one..
Standard E46 M3 driven properly does 0-100mph in 11secs. The vert 1.5 secs slower at around 12.5 secs which is still 2 secs quicker than a 330i. That driver in that vid is useless.

Sorry mate, I wasn't trying to put the 330i down, it's a great car. Just not in the same week as an E46 M3 acceleration wise.

i have 330i and 335d i know its not a 330d but on paper the figs for the 330 and 335 are virtually the same but i know for a fact the 335 is FAR quicker so id say the 330d probably is as well. the 330i with the perf exhaust does sound good though. one of those cases where you cant have everything!

I had the choice of both ... identical spec ... but considered the in the real world the 330d (LCI) would feel better ... and give 38mpg as opposed to 28mpg ...
I know the 330i sounds better - but what will be worth more in 3 years ... I doubt it will be the 330i .... 0-60 and 0-100 are effectively he same but the way the power is produced is so different. If I had of gone 330i I would have gone 335i |

Ok if your being finicky, some will make 318-319 etc, etc...
I've raced enough Over the years when I had my 335d to know what they can do and seen enough dyno graphs too, not sure what your trying to prove here. Even a 315HP M3 will murder a 272HP 330i...... But good ones make 330-340! Trap speed at Santa Pod's 1/4mile gives a good indication of how strong an engine is. A 330i will trap at 96-97mph, a poor M3 will trap at 102-103mph and over a second quicker over the 1/4.... Still 2 secs quicker to 100mph even with a poor M3.

I will say this though. Putting performance aside, the e90 330i - and more so the N53 - are an uncommon sight on the road, as is an e90 m3, or any e9x m3 for that matter.... so a sentiment of gratification on my part creeping in there. Last edited by Cyprio; 05-24-2012 at 03:59 AM.. |

IIRC when Autocar tested the 272bhp 330i it was 0.1 to 60 quicker (at 6 secs dead) than a 330d LCI 241bhp (at 6.1)... but nearly a second slower to 100mph at nearer 16 than the 15 secs dead of the LCI 330d.
I saw these figures when I was looking at both before I bought a 330d LCI |

My friend put his on a few months back and it was a tad under 300 IIRC - dodgy MAF sensor to blame. This is not uncommon apparently according to the chap that owns the rolling road (he owns an E46 M3). That said, I am yet to be convinced that the 330 makes 272 bhp when it has a few miles under its belt.
