I got ticketed for tints in VA. Help me resolve this?
I live in Northern VA.
After about 1 year of getting my windows (Rear, Front and Back) tinted. I got stopped today by a cop for tint ONLY. I was driving down I-95 S and as I was about exit, cop comes out of nowhere and pulls me over. .I instantly think I know why he stopped me, so I roll down all my windows (mind you it's a little chilly outside." Cop: "The reason I stopped you is because your windows look real dark." He uses the little red tint machine and measures it. Sure enough, it's lower than permitted. He writes me a ticket. I love my tints. I understand the law but I don't have them on to conceal anything from the officers. What can I do about this? Anybody that can give a fellow e90poster some advice? |

Bottom line is to meet the legal requirement. Get a lighter tint on all windows or just the fronts or risk of getting pulled over every quota days during mid and end of the month.

There are different percentages of tint front and back in VA, so in reality, you are getting tints front and back (50 percent front/35 percent rear, back window), thus, the term "tints" vice the singular form of "tint."

Go to a physician and get them to sign a medical waiver act and bring that to the DMV. The waiver you need to get is tell that doctor your eyes are sensitive to light when you're driving or something along those lines. It will allow your car to go as low as 35% all the way around, including the front windshield but don't do that. It's fairly easy to do if you want to take that step.
edit: clarification.

Did the "medical waiver" thing last time I went to my eye doctor for a new prescription. Just brought the form and told her that tint helped me drive with less light irritation. I already had tint by this point obviously. She signed it without question and I faxed the form in, had a new registration in less than a week.
New reg is the same, just says "sunshading" at the bottom. I carry the signed form as well with my Dr's signature just to be safe.

I had an Lexus IS300 pretty modded with 20% tint. On my 3rd ticket, mind you, it had been only 2 weeks since I got the second, the police officer asked me to go sit in his car. My friends and I almost had a heart attack, why is he asking me to go to his car. So I sat in side the passenger seat, and he showed my my record on his computer lol. He let me go, but wow was that weird to get a lecture in a state police car.

I've gotten 1 tint ticket in my old silver car and not one since. Most cops in the area can tell and most of them don't care as long as you're not doing anything stupid. If I get a few more tint tickets, then yes, I will probably go this route when I see my eye doctor.

Do you say that because you are an officer sir??
I have been driving around with my type tint for about 1 year and passed by local cops all the time and none ever said anything. I got stopped by state trooper (I think). I don't do it because I want to hide something or anything. Even if I had didn't have tint on I would prolly still bring windows down if I got stopped at night and make sure I kept my hands on the. I wanna make sure the cop feels safe and I don't want to get shot because of a cop thinking my cell phone is a gun. The only other reasons I can think of this happened was. 1- I was driving listening to Metallica, bobbing my head, driving fine (Not driving like a maniac at al). 2- I had just gotten new wheels, car looks more aggressive, less stocky. 3- One of the cops was teaching the other on what small things to look for that could prevent another fellow from getting hurt later during a traffic stop.? |
