745am EST on a partially cloudy day. The outer rings in person are not as bright as the inners but i thought this shot illustrates a good view on the GP Thunders from a distance

Looks good. I've noticed that the E90 halo optics are much more friendly with light distribution with all the PnP solutions. Too bad my E90 has E92 headlights

I have an LCI E90, which i believe is a similar design to the AEs that the E92s have. The way the halogen bulbs flood vs LED solutions with such a direct light distribution are why i think LED alternatives have such poor results during the day. The other part is the light color is so close to white and in daylight, its hard to see in general. The eye pics up the amber better during the day.

Just put in Lux Angel Eyes

I'll post a photo after I figure out how to do it from my iPhone. I'm happy to say that the install took less work than I was expecting.

I have a 2011 E90 (LCI) with halogens. I installed the LUX E90 LCI Halogen LEDs and coded the AEs to run as DRLs. The LUX "bulbs" look great at dusk/dawn, but are not very visible during the daytime.

I've seen quite a few late-model BMWs (stock) that have very bright AEs (DRLs)... so bright that they actually function as true DRLs (you can see them from a far distance... unlike mine).

What type of AEs did BMW put in those cars to make them run so bright? They're not aftermarket because most of the cars that I see are driven by housewives and older men... people who wouldn't go through the trouble of modifying their cars.

And, what solutions are available to me? OSS?

The LCI 3er, and F10 and newer bmws utilize LEDs (not in the rings) but attached to the light tubes better than our design.

That's what I suspected, thanks. I might try to retrofit some HID lamps into my housing to see if that works. Otherwise it looks like I'll need to cut out the stock rings and install some LED rings (anyone know of a kit for that?)

EDIT: Never mind. No one seems to make a HID kit for the E90 LCI Halogen. And, I just found out that the E90's have "perma-sealed" headlight housings which make them virtually impossible to open (i.e., baking them does not work).

So I need to a) find a brighter LED solution or b) go with aftermarket headlights like the Umnitza Projector90's.

A new F30 got behind me tonight and boy were its AEs bright! Put mine to shame! As the car passed me I could easily tell that it had the same type of light tubes that my car has (not a circular ring of individual LEDs).

Then I passed yet another BMW... an X3 this time... with the same bright corona rings... and it too clearly had light tubes like mine.

This got me thinking, so I jumped over to RealOEM and pulled up the parts list for the 2013 F30 headlight assembly. Bingo! BMW is now using a high-power LED module to illuminate the tubes (looks like 3 Cree LEDs). The part number is 63117311243.

I'm running the LUX E90 LCI Halogen LEDs in my car (2 Cree LEDs per module) and they're dim compared to the BMW module.

Here's a photo of the BMW LED module:

Here's a shot of those F30 corona rings. Bright as hell! I wonder if we could retrofit the BMW LED module to fit our cars?

hey guys - am I correct in assuming the lights described in this thread are only for cars that came stock with some halo, angel eyes already?

I've got a 2007 328xi with just stock halogen (no angel eyes). So if I want those I'd have to go with a whole new unit with everything included like the Depo V2s right?

I have been doing some reading and Found a place where all of these companies get them from wholesale.. They all come from China from what I can tell.. except Lux... and some of the highend companies... From what I have read... I think if you are willing to buy bulk the majority of these cost between 10-30$ (BWS is closer to 10 and Mtech is like 30 ish) ... so I wouldnt pay more then 100 bucks on something that cost 10 bucks to manufacture.. from what I can tell... the majority of these come from about 3 places in china and share all the same internal parts..

I do like 7000-8000 color (hint of blue) 10W+ and a large heatsink means cooler and brighter product...

You are quite right with the no-name brands. There are 2 or 3 manufactures that make them all and they all use the same crappy parts, and possibly even knock-off LED's. They are cheep to buy because the electronics are cheep and dont work to address any of the dimming issues that the car has. As well they dont protect against EMI and aren't even fused

Lux,

I have a set that I bought back in July 2010. The left side continues to flicker and throw error codes. Here is the exact description from my invoice:

MDSLUXH8
MDS LUX H8 Rings for E92/E93 BMW 3 Series, E90/E92/E93 BMW M3, E90 BMW 3 Series (LCI) and E70 X5

I see that you now have a V4 version. How does that compare with my set? I'm not sure if I have V3 or even older set. Also, is there any way to fix my set instead of spending another $250?

Thanks in advance!
