rear bumper E91

For some reason one of my PDC sensors has disappeared into the rear bumper. There is now just a hole where it used to be.I can see the wire for it by using a torch but as it is the offside one there is no chance of reaching it to replace it without taking off the bumper because of the plastic guards underneath...I have an electric towbar fitted.Question is ...is it really an easy job to remove the bumper....rear lights out....bolts underneath and in wheelarch..clips under lights and JUST pull bumper back towards me.Thanks and sorry if this has been "done to death" I'm a worrier where my cars concerned and don't want to damage anything.

i've never done a rear one but if its like the front it won't be very difficult at all*

these jobs can seem daunting when contempating removing a flush expensive looking part with many fittings that are not immediately obvious, but in reality they are usually very simple.

take your time and give it a try, let us know how you get on with pics.

* edit: or maybe not!

Get at it from underneath. I had both bumpers off my E91 to get them painted. Front one not too bad. Rear one pain in the ass. As anyone who has removed the rear bumper from an E9X will tell you there's a series of cut outs on the bumper that go onto the bumper brackets. These are below the rear quarter and most of the time on removal these tend to break as you will see on any for sale on eBay. I'm 99% sure you could do what you need from underneath.

Definitely can't get to it without taking off the bumper.Had it on my mates ramp and the tow bar is in the way along with the guards etc.If it was the nearside it might have been just possible. Was gonna try tomoz but snowing like mad here now so will be unable to get out of the street in the morning to take it to his garage and I ain't doing it outside on the drive....too cold.

Forgot about your towbar. Even if you loosened all the bottom fixings is it not possible. Maybe someone will be able to advise you of some way to remove it without damaging these. As said I have removed the rear bumper off my last two 320s and it was the same story. Saying that though mine sits alright after refitting but be careful and you should be ok. I would rather not remove not but if its your only option then it has to be. Good luck.

Removing the bumper is OK
It's as per your OP
Lights out, screws off.
Screws out of the mudguard, not forgetting the one that is behind the mud shield at the top each side - you have to bend the shield away to get to them.

What NOT to do is be tempted to pull the bumper side parts away from the car.
As you have said, just pull the bumper rearwards bodily.
On my last one, I had to use a lever between the bumper and the body where the bottom of the rear lights are to get it started. Once started, it will come off "easily".

No problem John,

Similar amount of snow here in Shropshire, but thawing fast.
Hopefully it will mostly disappear today as I want to get the bike out tomorrow and get cold, wet and muddy on the "green" lanes!

Oddly, on the E60, you HAVE to pull the bumper outwards to get it away from the clips.

Almost pension age myself. That's why I don't ride anything decent on the road. Falling off in mud and grass (which I do pretty often) is less hurtful than gravel, armco, lorries etc. Just found out we're snowed off.
