Smog

Anyone got pinged to get their d smogged on their registration? I did back in December, paid my reg, but haven't gotten the car smogged yet. I have a non-stock airbox, piggyback, and meth kit installed, and I got a ticket last month for expired registration, so I'm sort of in a bind to get this done.

I found it interesting that the car needed a smog 3 years after original new purchase, but I guess California is a little more anal, even though the d is a cleaner car (at least with NOx emissions) than the petrol version.

Not i (yet). Actually, in stock form, my understanding is that the d is also cleaner than the petrol as I pertains to particulate emissions as well.

All diesels are permanently exempt from emissions testing in Illinois.
ILDOT does, however, do inspections of diesels over 16,000 GVWR in "ozone non-attainment" areas, whatever that means.

Count me as happy that I never have to go get my d checked.

Anyone know if this exemption applies in other states?

This is wonderful and saves time and money going to the smog check center!

Georgia DMV doesn't require any emissions checking for diesel passenger cars.

New gasoline cars are exempt for the first 3 years.

Here in CA its only visual inspection! Car is not hooked to anything. I asked my wife and she said car was in for 30 seconds! Guy came out and told her this is just another way for state to collect fees. Go figure.

But even if it's a simple visual inspection, we Californians can't even pass it if one was to do a DPF removal. They'll clearly see the smog bellowing out of that exhaust. Well now that just sucks. Was planning to do it after my warranty ended.

Well, removing DPF is going to be a problem.

NY requires yearly dmv inspection , which includes emissions.
OBD port connection and all is recorded.

Actually, it depends on what county you live in which determines what tests are done in California.

If you live an a "smog zone"- basically counties with big cities in them, you have a more comprehensive test that includes a visual inspection, OBD connection and "snap throttle opacity" test. If your readiness codes (via OBD) are not set, you will fail inspection.

Note that diesels do not undergo a rolling dyno test like our gas counterparts.

I long for the days that diesels were exempt from smog checks in CA... only three years ago.

I live in Cali. The air box alone will fail you, unless it has a CARB sticker on it. CARB = California Air Resources Board, I have an after marked aribox in my big dodge diesel truck, had to remove it to pass inspection, since then I received the magic sticker in the mail, all good now.

I learned that here in cali I only buy approved items, or pay the consequences when it comes to smogging the vehicles. This means removal and replacement back to stock for inspection, or having carb certified with attached sticker installed. Also, if you are in CALI, do not throw, mutilate, sell, or loose your stock stuff, these idiot legislatures here may some day make it totally illegal to modify your car, truck, motorcycle, etc, and this could be retroactive. Just saying....

Sucks, but I do love it here.
