E9x swirl flaps
Coming from an e46 and always being on e46 zone, is it still recommended to blank the swirl flaps or are they not an issue on the e9x's? I have the e90 330d if that make any difference?

I believe it depends on the age of the E9x. Mine being 2009 has the 245ps N57D30O0 engine and doesnt suffer from the swirl flap problem as apposed to the earlier models with 231ps M57TU2D30 engine which I believe do.
Correct me if I am wrong |

Although I've seen many posts over different forums about the beliefs of the E90 suffering from swirl flap failure. The fact of the matter is; I have NEVER seen anybody suffer from this issue (any year/model).
I'm happy for anybody to prove me wrong, but I've asked such a question before and all I got was "crickets" at the other end Cheers, Charlie Last edited by Squintstream; 12-11-2012 at 01:10 PM.. |

As above. Folks say its an issue sometimes but with NO evidence to prove it. I've never seen or heard of it being an issue on the E9x range.
Hi Mit!

I left my (previous) 335d alone and that didn't have a warranty. I Read so many posts, paranoid that the car was going to swallow one of its flaps and this lead to one conclusion, there didn't seem to be any cases of E90s trying to consume their flaps!

That's not a failure like the E46 though. The real problem with those was that the flap spindle would break and the engine would eat the flap and the remains of the spindle. Thus - mashed valves, cylinders, pistons etc. Often a new engine fix. Sometimes get away with replacing the head, the valves, the piston and some other bits.
The post you link just seems to suggest that the flap leaked or that a gasket went or something. Tbh, that's just on par with any car where anything can go wrong. Had the flap broken off and the engine got mashed, then we might have an example. As such, I still stand by my guns that there are no reported swirl flap failures on the E9x. Willing to be corrected tho.

Thats the problem isnt it, you spend all that time removing the inlet on a six to change the glow plugs and think I may as well take the swirl vanes out at the same time. They cant cause a problem if they arent there. Mine were like new when I blanked them but I wasnt going to all that trouble and going back again. I bought the nice blanks from pmw. If you arent going in there then I probably wouldnt bother.
