Downpipe Help Badly Needed!

Hey everyone.

I could use some big help and opinions from everyone on these forums. I had some extra cash lying around and I opted to buy some AR downpipes. So they arrived a couple months ago and now I am looking at installing them.

So I've called around to some shops and most shops won't put the downpipes into my 335xi because they don't have experience and some shops even went as far as to tell me it's a waste of my money and their time as it's not legal, it'll blow the O2 sensors and will need replacing every year, and that the turbos will eventually go around 150K KM because of the added pressure.

Now, everything when it comes to modding has risk, and I knew about about the illegal nature, but I bought them because everyone around me told me it's a very usual mod (everyone being people on this forums whenever the "what mod should I do" question comes up and my friends who are into cars) and that I would see very noticeable gains from these.

So now I'm just feeling like it's a big mistake I bought these. What I'm looking for is honest advice on the down pipe situation and if anyone has experienced major errors with the install (major errors I've been warned about are 02 sensors need replacing often, a check engine error code, blown turbos, etc.).

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

It's a waste of money! I'll get them off your hands for $50. At least you can recup some of your money...

1. It is not waste of money if you want increased preformance.
2. It is illegal to tamper with emissions equipment in most countries
3. It will not blow your o2 sensors
4. It will not blow turbos. There is less heat and less restriction. Turbos will last longer
5. It will make the car faster and sound a little better (bit louder and more turbo whistle)

Personnally I can't wait to get mine on (plus the tune and fmic)

So they're trying to tell you that REMOVING a restriction in the system (cat) will lead to MORE heat and MORE pressure? Pls.

Get on your regional forum and ask if anyone knows a reputable shop for install. Half the people on this forum will say you wasted your money on AR. I for one love AR products so good choice. you will need a BMS DP fix.

Your last paragraph tells me that you haven't done much research at all.

Blown turbos from catless downpipes? Catless downpipes a waste of money? Frequent o2 sensor r&r?

Looks like you haven't found a decent shop in your looking - the stuff people are telling you is not very correct, so they obviously just don't want to do the work and any shop that tells you that free flowing downpipes will add pressure and blow your turbos and O2's is someone that I would not let within a mile of my car.

I used to live in Waterloo long ago, so don't really know anyone anymore, but did you try German Autotech in Waterloo or Autocube seems to come highly recommended on Victoria st in waterloo - those are the first 2 I would try not having a personal recommendation.

Good luck with it - just a word of warning, the downpipes will throw O2 sensor codes once installed and if you have to do an emissions test that plugs into the ODBII port, the car will not show readiness and fail the test. The fix for this used to be O2 simulators from Burger Motorsports (called DPFix) but since they are in California, they were given a stop sale order on downpipes and the DPFix, so unless you already have the DPFix, you can't buy it right now and may have problems finding them used. Someone I am sure will come out with a version of it soon from somewhere else or Burger will figure out how to sell it, but just an FYI.

Removing emissions equipment is against the law and punishable by huge fines. That's why the shops won't do it. Buy some catted DPs and they should do it.

I installed my dps about 2 months ago...definitely one of the best supporting mods to go with a tune. 02 sensors might break during install and that's it. I had one go out, that was not fun, but most shops are good about being careful, if you can find one. Yes downpipes will not blow 02 sensors quicker, or turbos, its free flowing, more air=happy car!
