anyone replace a rear wheel bearing?

Question guys what method are you using to get the rear hub off? also does the axle need to be removed before you pull the hub? how are you getting the axle out mine didn't simply slide out apparently.

For pulling the hub you'll need a slide hammer as shown in the vid at 2:27 or a bearing separator.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?x-yt-c...-ts=1422503916

You can't press in a new bearing unless you haven't removed the axle.
Give it a good whack with a hammer and it should slide out. Protect the threading either by the nut (you should buy a new nut anyway) or a piece of hard wood.

The bearing is secured by a spring retainer. Do not forget.

Press the new bearing in applying force only to the outer race. If you press it in at the inner race expect the need for a new bearing in less than 10.000miles.
For pulling in the new bearing you can use the outer race from the old bearing as a stamper. For this take an angle grinder and make one cut to get it into an open C -like shape. This prevents the stamper from beeing stuck and you can retract it easily.

I used a hub puller that you bolt onto the hub and then use the center stud to push the axle out, I have a picture of the puller and of doing the job but can not figure out how to post a picture

I had a local indy shop do mine. That job was a little above my pay grade.

Yep, some of the best bearings available.
Funny though, I've been driving BMWs for 25 years and never have had to replace a wheel bearing.

Yeah I wish I never came across the rear one but icy parking lot on a curve means rear wheel contact with the curb.

I forgot to say same goes for the inner race. Press the wheel hub in only when supporting the inner race.

Never use force that will charge axial pressure to the bearing balls unless you want hem to become cubically

Some people are saying the axle slides right into the hub.....I literally have to use a hammer and socket to get the Axle into the hub. Brand new axle brand new hub they don't just slide together like any axle I've ever swapped.

Oh yeah when both pieces were brand new they wouldn't just slide together at all. Would go about 1/4 inch then stop.

I always bought used axles so I'm not sure. Maybe there's a thin layer of resin / laquer on the cogged part (for corrosion protection)

Yup. Knew it would be difficult, wasn't sure how difficult, thought I could get it done in one night... I had to cycle to work the next two days

My advice, if you're not 100% sure you can do it, take it to an Indy.

Oh yeah with out a doubt. Put it like this the first time I did it, broke my carrier at about 28 tons getting the stock axle out! Shit by now I'm pretty quick with it this next time should be the last lol! And I'm using the proper tools for bearing and hi removal. This is not so diy friendly for those less skilled.

In my other post I should have said rear bearing.
I've replaced front bearings on both my previous e30 M3 and e36 M3.

For sliding anything on a spindle.
My mechanic told me to put them in the oven at about 200-250.
Not hot enough to do any damage but will cause the race to thermally expand and slide on the spindle.

Worked great on the front bearing of my e36.
