Hi Guys,

I just did my CDV replacement yesterday. Wow, I knew I could shift, but BMW made me believe I couldn't lol. My install took me long time because the damn stupid clip gave me hard time down there. my brakes and clutch feel the same, even though some liquid came out of the hose.

So I have a question, Is that something I should be worry about? I know some people have to bleed their clutch and stuff.

TIA

Nope. If your pedals feel fine then youre alright. For the most part, bleeding the clutch isnt necessary. Ive done 3 and didnt bleed the clutches any time.

It might be a stupid question but does the diesels have CDV as well? Cause on the zeckhausenracing there are listed only petrol ones... but why the gearbox would be different in diesel / petrol ?

Ive done 10+ so far without bleeding. If done correctly, you dont have to.

Hey HyperM3, after reading your comments, I just did the CDV delete yesterday without bleeding. the Clutch pedal was lax initially but after pumping it a few times, it returned to normal consistency. no problems so far. Thanks to EvanL and you!

I picked up a spare CDV from the wholesale department at my dealer for $5.95. You can also take out the CDV, modify it and replace it for FREE but I wanted to do everything at once while under the car so I spent $5.95 on a spare. I then took the following steps to modify the CDV. Before removal first crimp the rubber line leading to the CDV so you don't lose all you brake fluid. Here's a picture of the CDV before the modification. As you can see the fluid is restricted from flowing through quickly and will therefore slow the engagement of the clutch on fast shifts. Next take a small allen wrench and insert it into the small end of the CDV as shown. With minimal pressure tap the allen wrench and the restrictor will pop right out. Pictured here is the inside of the CDV once popped out. There is nothing else left inside the CDV and it's now guts free. Reinstall the modified CDV. Fluid is now free to flow through the valve unobstructed and you will notice the difference right away. If you reinstall the CDV quickly enough you may not need to bleed the lines but it's a good idea anyway. Since I did this mod months ago I don't have actual step-by-step instructions on how to do it but following is a link to the best DIY CDV replacement I've seen: http://www.billswebspace.com/BMWCDVMod.htm. Without the guts in your stock CDV it looks identical inside to the Zeckhausen modified CDV in this DIY.

I just did this mod. The longest part was cutting wood to allow the car to fit a GM jack underneath. The mod was very straight foward.

Step:
1. jack up the car
2. remove the (7) 8mm screws that hold the under panel.
3. Rotate the underpanel until the clip is aligned with the slot so that the panel can be removed.
4. Locate the CDV
5. Clamp or vise down the rubber tube to prevent leakage of brake fluid
6. Rotate the CDV so that you can get a screwdriver to pop out the clip closest to the rubber line
7. take a very very skinny screw driver and push in one of the bases of the clip and the clip should pop out from the other side with super ease. It was hard to get a flat head underneath the bent part of the clip like I did in step 6 so I tried this out.
8. Pop in the new unit and pop the clamps in place.

Review:
Upon initial drve I really didn't notice a difference to tell you guys the truth. After some spirited driving I realized there was a drastic improvement. I just was applying the driving techniques with the stock CDV at first(to counter the notchiness) making it worse.

My biggest improvements were from gears 2-6. 1-2 is still somewhat jerky for me, perhaps due to the BMW ssk. I had a few opportunities to take 1st hard to 7k and then shift quickly to 2nd. In my previous setup, I would feel a big jerk/clutch slip upon transitioning into 2nd. Today was different... The clutch just GRABBED and there was no hessitation. It was beautiful!

It is unreal how smooth the gear shift transitions are now. I had moments where I would hate my car on those days that I wasn't on to of my shifting. This is how I should have felt from day 1 of ownership.
