Hi My youngest has started driving he is 17 ,we have started looking at cars for him and found a nice 2010 Fiesta Zetec s 3 door he seamed to like it enough so I came home and put his details through confused and compare the market foook me ! £6500-£8000


Is it the car ? or a combination of boy /car /age =piss take

My Niece is 17 and bought a 1.6 clio and pays £1700 just changing into a C1 and it goes down to £800

Have any off you had any experiance with young drivers and insurance.Am I missing something, Do I have to own the car and add him as a driver on one off them policys that named drivers also earn NCD.

Afraid young ones are getting hit really hard.

I'm sure a 3 door Fiesta Zetec S is a little bit too high up the insurance rating for a new driver.

Even on an old banger it's still going to hurt.

Insurance quotes are always random. Each year it seems to swing who is quoting least.

Pretty scary how much it costs to insure kids these days. I can kind of understand it of course, however, wonder what the stats are like these days i.e. have the crazy prices in fact forced young drivers to take more care??? I know if I was young again (!!) and paying daft money for insurance the knowledge that one ding would make it impossible to insure myself and therefore be immobile would certainly focus my attention (but maybe my way of thinking is too sensible, after all, I'm not young anymore!!).

When I was 19 I had a 1.0L Polo worth around £800. My insurance was £1070. This was 6 years ago.

My insurance went down year after year, but it's still heartbreaking when my insurance is more than the car is worth. Logically, it was cheaper to replace the car!!

On a side note, the car was on my own policy as I wanted to build up my no claims. At the time, some of my friends chose to be added to their parents insurance policies so they could get better cars. However, they didn't build up their no claims bonus.

And of course insuring your child's car in your name but in reality with them being the main driver isn't legal. Is a short term cost saver but better to keep it legit and let them build a bonus.

Send them out to McDonalds to fry burgers to earn the cash for the insurance if they want thier own wheels :-)

That sounds more like your niece got insurance while on a provisional license?

Getting insurance on a provisional license will come in around 50-70% cheaper than on a full UK license.
So many people make this mistake of getting quotes on a provisional and not checking what it would be on a full license, and even worse many don't realise they have to tell the insurer when they have passed and thus have kids driving around on no insurance.

Search, search, search and search everywhere. Put it in the young 'uns name to build up NCB (hopefully!) and put you and your good lady on as named drivers, assuming you have a reasonable driving record.
Insurance prices are variable day to day and some incomprehensible.
My now-20 year old son (student) has a 2 litre Mondeo diesel (yeah, I asked why too!!) insured for £1600 fully comp. He was bored over Xmas and got a quote for my '04 530d and it came in just under £1400!! Still, it's sold now, so he can't have it!!!

As others have said, the car is certainly a factor. A 1.0 litre something or other would be a much better idea until the NCD is built up. Probably less temptation to do something stupid too. No offence to the OP but a Zetec S in the hands of a 17 year old five up with his mates is just asking for trouble.

There really isn't a lot you can do apart from having your son settle for something pretty basic for the first year or two. I didn't do this and my first car was a 106 GTi, I paid out of my bottom for the insurance but I'm a petrol head and I worked like a slave in Halfords during studies to fund it but that was 'only' £2000pa TPFT. I stomached it until I was 19 and then my insurance dropped drastically with some NCB under me, since then my experience and added NCB have made affording and handling more powerful cars realistic, to the point I'm at now entering my mid-20's this year (I wonder if the over-25 myth is true?) so it's not such a long time to wait to get into some decent cars really.

My GF had her Renault Sport Clio written off last year and bought a new Toyota Aygo with the settlement as she took a new job meaning more mileage. She's 21 and pays around £180pa to insure it FC and around £30pa to tax it. Based on that I think for a new driver it would be considerably cheaper than the Fiesta and they're really not too bad, pretty nippy, funky looking and with all the modern gadgets such is Aux input, Bluetooth, AC etc.

However, the boy in me says get something retro and fix it up together

The best thing to do is buy something cheaper and older so that it can be insured third party for him to build up his NCB. You could spend days phoning round for quotes but I doubt you'd get your son insured for that car at a price that any sane person would think is reasonable.

There are plenty of safe, older cars out there.

There are also plenty of 2010 Ford Fiestas that aren't a Zetec S.

I am in the lowest insurance area in the country.
I have a daughter.
At 17 with a full license the cheapest we have got is a Micra for £1800 3rd party, or £2050 fully comp.

It was £800 for that same car on a provisional btw.

We had an Aygo before that, and that was more money, however it was a 10 plate.

As others have said the car makes a big difference. My daughter is 17 an we got a Toyota Yaris. £600 with Admiral fully comp but on a provisional which as others have said will go up when she passes her test. The best thing to do if you can is get a Citroen C1 or Peugeot equivalent with the 3 yrs free insurance. Regularly done as a promo and lets your kid build up no claims as well as not stomaching the cost.
