Just loaded the new firmware update at lunchtime.
First off tried the map 8 (turbos off!), comes up with a CEL, but I'd expect that. Now this felt really strange, it just felt slow. Would this be the same as 325i or 330i? Now I know these cars aren't slow, but in comparison they do feel it. Another thing, I'm sure there's an explanation for this, but my perf Exhaust got louder, really loud, not in a bad way, but people started looking at me Pulled over to clear the CEL and changed to map 1, bloody hell it was pulling hard. Same with map 5, it felt much stronger. First thing I thought was, is this safe? Didn't want to risk map 2. Set my max boost to 15 now just in case. Conclusion: I didn't think I would notice any difference, but it appears to be a fair bit sharper. Last edited by Boz335i; 02-23-2012 at 07:52 AM.. |

I've actually noticed the same with the latest firmware. I've got DPs, FMIC amongst other things and map 1 feels as quick as map 2 on the old firmware.
Map 8 is just slow, feels more like a 320i in my opinion. I'm pretty sure the 330i is quicker as it is designed to make its power all up at the top end of the rev range. I thought it sounded lovely though! |

Yep, I commented on this to Neil in another thread earlier this week.
Pulls like a train on map2, even better than before. No issues either, just more grunt everywhere. Perhaps the fuelling has been optimised a little better.

Generally lower compression is found in purpose designed turbo engines. And you also sapping energy turning two turbines in the exhaust stream that now do nothing. And of course the tuned exhaust manifold of the N/A car is also not present. And lots of other things mean its performance without turbo is nothing like the N/A 330i Whats the intention of MAP8? Just a 'valet' mode for drivers you dont trust?

Dont think it has any real purpose other than maybe R&D. Good for kicks! The CEL is a known issue (beta firmware) |

I SO NEED TO UPDATE!!!
I am on very old firmware i believe on my JB4... and continoussly beat V8 M3s (i have no other mods).... So excited to try the update. Neil,.. if you run map 8 (no turbos)... does that mean you get tremendously increased fuel economy? Yes you get loos of power, but for doing round the town driving, it could work without damaging anything? |

On MAP8 you've just got low compression ratio plus all the untuned restrictions of the intake runs / intercooler / pipework etc and the exhaust restriction of the turbine housings themselves (the wastgate opening is only about 20mm dia). All just conspiring to make the engine sluggish and inefficient. As said, nothing like a NA 330i for example, |

When the wastegates are fully open these pulses just pass right through, making it louder at the tailpipe. (normally the WG are rarely open accept under deceleration, but in that case fuel is cut off so there is no combustion exhaust pulse anyway) I noticed this before, when diagnosing wastegate rattle, if you pull a vacuum hose off one of the vacuum bottles then both wastegates drop fully open, at idle you can hear the exhaust note jump up quite a notch. |

From reading various threads and tech specs for both JBx and Procede, in NA mode you would be lucky to see ~170BHP.
While it may be useful for a "valet" mode [think red Ferrari in Ferris Buellers Day Off], as Doughboy says, its a myth abt being more economical + would not recommend extended use as its likley to mess up yr adaptions. |

My fuel consumption has gone down on map 5
16.5 mpg to 18.2. Every little helps! I still find map 5 a bit jumpy, even after several WOT runs, not convinced by it. |

Its fine here, both five and two.
Two is more consistent in the logs, runs to 15PSi constantly and I only have I/C now. Steve
