I don't know if it's effective, but this is my warm up ritual:

I live on a long one way street, and it's about 3/4 of a mile to the stop sign. Cars are parked on both sides and it's narrow so about the fastest you can go safely is 20 mph. When I leave for work in the morning, I short shift into second at about 15 mph and then get to 20mph and set the cruise in second gear until the end. My thinking is that the car builds heat better than it would in 3rd.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter I am sure, but even with 121k miles it still only uses about a qt of oil every 5-6k miles.

Nice! hows she holdin up, any major repairs? Im about to do my 100k maintenance on mine
Really good. I'm just over 191,700 as of Thursday. The only issue that was out of the norm was the AC compresser went at 82,000 miles. Other than that regular maintenance and waterpump/T-stat, and an O2 sensor. The car has been very reliable for a BMW. I do my own work, so it's not too costly. Easy to work on as most Bimmers are.

That's impressive. What routine maintenance have you done? Have you changed the transmission or differential fluids?
