Intercooler heat soak at track events
So anybody can look at the intercooler review threads and see that the aftermarket IC's are far superior to the stock IC in terms of heat soaking; on single pulls and such you'll see the aftermarket IC go up 10-15 degrees while the stock IC will go up 50-70.
My question is, has anybody datalogged on the track for a 20-25 minute session? Where does the temp on the aftermarket IC's lie after 10 minutes compared to stock? It's obvious they're better for 1-3 pulls, but they're much bigger so it would take more time for them to heat soak. Do they transfer heat that much better also? Anybody have any data on this? Thanks! |

I can share some data but nothing formal with my N55.
My coolant temperature went from ~253*F after a session to 205*F with the ETS 5" intercooler (track conditions: sunny/humid, 90-100*F). Measured via the readout on my BMW Performance electric steering V2. In terms of feel; I had no overheating with the stock intercooler but the throttle responsiveness would taper off throughout the session. It wasn't too bad because the intercooler has time to partially recover on the long straightaways at the tracks I visit, but it was there. The responsiveness is noticeably better with the ETS intercooler; I've yet to have it heatsoak to the point where I notice lag. It was a nice upgrade.

An aftermarket IC makes a big difference in terms of engine heat during a 30mins track session. This is even better when paired with catless 3" downpipes.
