CBU inspection at 50k miles

Well took the car in for all 6 glow plugs to be replaced at 50k miles and asked the technician to let me know how much CBU there was. The answer was, it looked pretty good in there and nothing to be concerned of at all so maybe quality shell power nitro fuel and 10k miles oil changes with quality oil has really paid off

Holy crap, I just had exactly the same experience at 75K (i.e., all six glow plugs replaced). I specifically asked to have the carbon buildup checked and he said it looked fine. I am skeptical. That said, I have dumped enough fuel additives into the car to sink a battleship.

1) the "Shell Nitro" is gasoline/petrol only. You're wrong to be crediting it with anything.
2) If you look at diagrams of the combustion chamber, or pictures of the piston top, you'll notice that there is virtually no room in there for anything - especially not carbon. The CBU is in the INTAKE runners and valve ports in the HEAD. From the glow plug holes, nothing but the piston is visible, so unless he did a borescope in the intake, you know nothing.

Floyda you do realize that the intake manifold comes off to replace the glow plugs right?

I was of the understanding that the inlet had to be removed for the glow plugs to be changed and I can assure you that I do use shell vpower nitro diesel and have been for years

Perhaps you're right - it is located between the intake valves... one of the diesel intro documents do indeed identify installation of glow plugs before installing intake manifold.

I now notice you're in the UK; Nitro+ diesel is not sold by Shell in the USA, hence my comment. It's all a scam, anyway.

Who knows eh? What I do know is, after 50k miles I don't have a CBU issue

Whats the deal with the glowplugs? i got 133,000 miles and have not had them changed. Is this like a preventative maintenance job?

This glow plug thing only recently started appearing on these boards. Apparently the glow plugs do more than just start your car on a cold morning. This feels like the mystery component in our car. I had mine replaced at 70k.

Apparently they are used while the engine is cold and for regens as well as starting. They must throw some kind of error when they fail as I took my car in for it not revving as high in each gear as it used to, so it was changing gear early at anything between 3600 and 4200 RPM. BMW told me it was due the the glow plugs blowing. I was sceptical but it works fine again now, so guess they were right

WOW!

such hostility!

one might be inclined to feel good for the guy who has no carbon build-up.

all of the wailing about it on the forum would lead one to believe it's required.

certainly newbies and one-time lurkers always ask about this - it seems to me
the forum is a magnet for complaints - which may not necessarily be issues
*everyone* experiences or will experience.

I was surprised that such an innocent post of my experience needed a flame suit to be worn
