The oil cooler needs to go after the oil/ water heater and have a bypass style thermostat in it. If you put it before the stock one you may aswell not even have it. Really the best route is to remove the stock one completely and just go with the air/oil one.

Why do you say this? Why does it need to go after cooler.. You state things without any reasoning. Why does it need tstat, stock doesn't have one? When we need to do things, an explanation would be nice....

Sorry. The water /oil cooler can only cool to the temp of the engine coolant and it's a small unit, not large enough for racing. The air /oil cooler will get the temps lower keeping the flud from burning up. If you don't run a bypass tstat the oil will get to cool and that's bad too. Cooling oil down then heating it up again makes no sense so if you insist on keeping the water/oil unit plum in the air/oil cooler after the stock one

Yeah but here comes the snag... and it is slow urban driving where you have zero airflow across this air/oil cooler sitting isolated in the wheel arch... I was about to add a fan controlled by t-stat/switch but there is almost no space and it will block most of the airflow when moving... so I might end up just by leaving the water/oil exchanger in place and add this additional air/oil with a T-stat... it is a bit over-complicated but it should work all the time...
And yes, the water/oil oem echanger DOES NOT heat up the AT oil, it has been proven already...

That's the only reason I am looking for a cooler, city stop and go driving.. I seen 220F in stop and go, it slowly creeps up to coolant temp which makes sense due to heat exchanger.. Once back on highway it will slowly drop to 165F.

Got to figure something out for those stop and goes runs. Thinking a little four row cooler in front of radiator will help slow the creep... Anyways I will get some good data points of the before and after.

It rises up to the temp of water until the main fan kicks in and cools it down a bit... in theory it should not go past those 220... I am still on the fence with that additional fan IOT get rid off this oem exchanger completely and to simplify things... Bmw X6 is runs two> water+air/oil coolers...

I have taken the bullet as my heat exchanger lines were leaking and decided to cut them out, plug the water lines and install a MB AT cooler w T-stat in the left dwell.
However not all went well, one ebay an6 connector was defective, plugs were let say not exactly water tight, cooper washer (that I have used to replace MB oem click-on connectors) was not soft enough (yes, I know by now that I should have heat treat it prior to use it), so multiple leaks...
oem lines are also larger than an6, I will replace them to an8 cause I had only 1m of hose and that is barely enough (2x 0,5 m is ok as long as you don't screw anything up).
These ugly looking joints surprisingly hold fine...
I had to go like 80 km and during the last 5 km the cooler/connection start leaking, so I have made it with properly lubricated LF tyre and doorsill...
So an8 bits are ordered and the story to be continued :-)
