Guns don't cause crime. The mentality of people who consider guns to be an easily accessible solution to routine everyday problems is what causing the large portion of crimes that could have been easily avoided. "Criminals" are not the issue here (not even mentioning the fact that trying to lump them all into a broad category of "criminals" is a rather primitive demagogic trick).

The issue here is that, for one example, an ordinary American teenagers today (not criminals at all), disgruntled at their teacher, consider a) keying the teacher's car or b) bringing the gun to school and shooting the teacher dead in front of the class, as two virtually equivalent ways to "set things straight". They don't really see the qualitative difference between a) and b). Killing people is considered by many ordinary everyday "normal" American people as just another form of "vandalism". ("Vandalism is bad, no doubt about it, but they will get over it eventually. The insurance will cover it").

You say the person is not a criminal but then present option "B". Someone who would consider option "B" is a criminal. They do not choose option "B" simply because they may be able to get their hands on a gun. They choose it because in their messed up mind they feel that great bodily harm is an ok option. The gun did not have any bearing on that choice being made.

The availability of guns do not cause crime. In fact, as guns have become more and more availalbe, violent crime rate per capita has gone DOWN. This is per the FBI Uniform Crime Reports, CDC WISQARS, and BATFE Firearms Commerce Report, dated 2008. And in fact, the US has a lower crime rate per capita than most countries with far stricter gun control and less gun availability.

So, to say that the fact that americans are allowed to carry guns and have availability to guns somehow causes more crime is actually the exact opposite.
