Just got forwarded this email...speed cameras!
THIS MESSAGE HAS BEEN RECEIVED FROM A VERY RELIABLE SOURCE
Please circulate in order that the risk of obtaining a fine and points is minimised *Be warned and be careful !* *M25 and the M11 will be equipped with Point to Point speed devices from August 1st 2009* Once you enter the M11 for instance ,you pass a camera that takes a photo of your car and registration number and records the exact time, upon exit another camera takes a photo of your car and registration number, and records the exact time you leave the motorway. The Cameras are set at a fixed points. With both the start time and finish time, a computer is able calculate the time it has taken for you to travel between the two fixed points, and works out your average speed and how many miles you may have travelled over the national speed limit and If you have completed the clocked journey too fast you are given a speeding ticket. At the present time the national speed limit for motorways is 70 M.P.H. For every minute that you drive over the speed limit you will incur a fine of £30, and one point on your licence . The fines will be issued automatically but the MOT will be allowing a variance of 10% for 3 months, which gives a top speed of 77mph untill the end of October 2009 The MOT will at a later date add cameras at all exit points along the motorways. Remember that now with the new legislation, fighting speed camera fines is almost impossible. You must prove the device is faulty and if you are not a technician working on them, you have no chance of beating the fine. *You Have Been Warned * |

The adoption of average speed cameras may be true but this bit isn't:
That would mean a substantial change in the law based on the length of time that I commit an offence. If I drive at 100mph for 55 seconds I'll be OK? That bit is nonsense.

It could stand for Ministry of Transport or Department for transport, either way I'd like to check these claims directly.

Cool. We can do drag races to whatever speeds we want, then just pull over on the hard shoulder for a few minutes break and carry on.

If this were true I am sure it would be made public by various media channels by now. This kind of change cannot be done without public knowledge and/or law changes. The motorway would also require regular average speed camera warning signs throughout. When Swindon instigated the camera vans on the M4 there were plenty of warning messages in the press and TV. Warning signs are visible at each potential camera spot.

Where does this assault on the Motorist end?? Hopefully when GB is given the order of the boot - but I doubt it.
It is simply crazy that all that money is spend on cameras just to make money. Motorways are the safest roads in the UK statiscally, and this madness will simply alienate motorists and the police authorities even more then it has already been damaged over the last 15 years, it will not make roads safer. When will common sense begin to dictate poilcy, I will vote for the first party who stands up for motorists. If the same effort is expended in tackling violent crime this would be the safest place to live on earth. The problem is there is absolutely no police accountability in this country (at least not to the voting public), Politicians are to blame, particularly those who are driven around in chaffeur driven Government cars. Rant over..... |

Can't be arsed looking it up but that has ALL the hallmarks of a hoax email. For one thing this "For every minute that you drive over the speed limit you will incur a fine of £30, and one point on your licence" is not actually legal as it would be one continuous offence. For another thing a camera on the entrance to a section of road and one on the exit cannot tell if you spent the entire time at 78 or almost all the time at 70 and a mad two minutes at 190 so how could it possibly fine you per minute?
I call utter hoax. It ticks most of the classic hoax boxes a) it claims to be from a reliable source b) it asks you to forward it on c) it proposes something that is bound to wind you up before you stop to think about it d) it references nothing to back it up. Seriously, if you see an email like this your first thought should be 'delete this'. |

They are a pain. Especially as it limits some of the lorries to very slow speeds on the single track parts (40 mph for Arctics for 20 miles each direction from my town - A road, 60 mph for cars) - throw in some Irish lads racing to catch the ferry at certain times of the day .... Having a set of 2 up, 2 down Cibies either side of the number plate, or indeed Swiss plates helps D.
