This might be stupid question, but I'm going to change my oil on my own next week. My car is CPO for another few years. Do I have to document the oil change with the dealer so the warranty isn't voided (ie. they could say I never changed the oil) or do I just change it myself and reset it?

I would contact your local dealership and ask the question to them about it. My assumption is you do not have the maintenance plan which is why you are changing your own oil (Then again you could be doing a between interval oil change and have the maintenance plan)? Depending on if you have or don't have the maintenance plan would determine if you should reset the maintenance reminder.

My opinion is you need some kind of documented proof that you used the correct oil and filter, the way you can prove that is with receipts of your product purchase around the time of the oil change. Next you would need to document when those specific products were used (Date and mileage of the car at time of change). I personally would just scan/clear pictures of all that stuff and email it to yourself as records/proof.

Since I don't have a maintenance plan... I like to reset the oil service because it keeps a counter of how many times I have done my oil changes in the car. I average between 7500-10000k mile Oil Change Interval with the dealership since with a coupon it comes out to $65 Out The Door. I could probably save a few bucks by getting a 5qt jug of Mobil1 0W-40 LL-01 oil at Walmart for $22.50 and a 10 pack of MANN oil filters for under $100. But honestly... I don't mind spending about $20 on labor on top of that normal cost to have a dealership do it and build up some good will.

After all, my dealerships are very cool... they always give me free coolant top ups and free windshield washer fluid whenever I ask (No need to be in for a service appoint either... just roll up and say "can you top me up" and it's done in a few seconds).

Dealership in NJ always run oil change specials @ $79.
This is a very good price, check your local dealer's website for service specials.

JMK in NJ always has it for $65 on their website.

US warranty laws forbid a manurfacturer from denying a warranty claim if the owner does his own maintenance. However, the owner must have documentation that the oil was changed (i.e. sales receipts dated at the time of the oil change), and records (date and time) indicating the oil was changed. Absolutely reset the CBS. The CBS records the mileage of the reset, so it makes a record for you. Also, under the warranty laws, the owner may be called upon to demonstrate he has the ability and capability to perform the service.

I just got shit at the dealer for resetting the mileage when an oil change was done outside of BMW... Almost didn't change the oil in my wife's X5... Only it being due for an annual made them change it. They are very strict with going by the mileage counter... Downside to free maintenance I guess. Anyways, warranty on the 08' X5 is up next month anyways so no more hassle.

Because some people don't want to wait 15K miles to change their oil. I certainly don't.

I think you have the right to change your own oil.

If the dealership gives you a hard time, show them this and fight

CPO doesn't cover standard maintenance... I've changed my oil a few times, did the brakes once and have been in for CPO work a few times and have had zero issues. I've always reset the computer too.

I've been wondering about this as well. After my last oil change, the CBS was set to 21,000 miles for my next oil change. Conveniently, that will put out of the 50K covered maintenance period. Seems super shady to me...

Btw, I also got the brake work done on my car by dealership at a cheaper price than buying it online and getting done from outside mechanic.
DIY is another thing.

I think for regular maintenance things BMW doesnt charge much, plus you get a loaner.

The lowest I paid there was $57.95. But they are rude, it's as if I'm doing something wrong (or was--past tense) in paying $58 plus tax for the oil, and taking a loaner for the day. Hey, if you're losing on the transaction, talk to your marketing manager. Apparently they did, and they got rid of that price! But I got 3 oil changes before they did that! LOL

I guess it also depends on person to person and the dealership as well.
I never had any kind of attitude problem or anything like that at BMW of Mt Laurel. Moreover, I always schedule with my fav SA.

Funny, 2 yrs. ago the SA said you need 4 new tires. Just to entertain him, I said do you recommend Bridgestone or Michelin? He said both are good, but I've quoted the Bridgestones and it's $2,300 including the alignment, mounting balancing and tossing the old tires [more like putting them on a CPO] (keep in mind I'm there for an oil change). I pretended to think about it LOL and then said oh, ok, I think I'll wait. (I know the tires were like 7/32 in front and 5/32 in back)

I went back another 3X to the same dealership and never any mention of the tires.....

I never had any issues with that at bloomfield/JMK, then again I never needed a loaner either, I would just leave the car with them the entire day while I took the train into work.

I do my own, mainly because I use a different oil and I like putting eyes on the engine/undercarriage every so often Dealer told me no problem as long as I kept the receipts and the receipts showed what oil it was and was LL-01 approved. They never bitched about the reset, but weren't happy when I took it in for the buttload of shadow misfire codes that I found when I reset the oil with the BT tool.

This hurts me to hear/see happen! There is so much honest money to be made out there! I’m not sure why people feel the need to do this type of thing. It would be one thing if the reason he was recommending replacement of tires was based on age (I think NHTSA recommends replacement after 5-6 years regardless of use), but based on tread life remaining… well I’m done.
