7 inch intercooler laggy?
Hi guys,
In the process of buying a 7 inch vrsf intercooler. Anyone went from stock to a 7 inch and noticed any downsides? I'm concerned if 7" is overkill. Will be going to drags occasionally. also running e85 map 7 . |

I got the VRSF 7" and it's not laggy.
If I had the chance again I'd go the 5" stepped, as I think the 7" is overkill, and the fitment doesn't cover the entire lower bumper opening (theres a gap at the top where the air can flow up over the intercooler). |

I went the 5" stepped VRSF because i was worried about lag and i didn't want to trim anything. I didn't notice any change in lag compare to OEM, and I don't have any IAT issues at all, even when running 21psi boost. With the 5" stepped it looks really nice behind the grill as there is no gap.
Either way, I'd recommend being very careful with the mounting screws as i snapped off one of the stupid screws they provide and now have one side cable tied up. I recommend getting your own screws with a hex head rather than a nut, like OEM does. If you're only planning drags, i'd suggest 5". I think 7" is only needed for pulls after pulls after pulls, e.g the track. If you want to upgrade turbo's in the future go the 7" though. |

I have a big fmic with large 3" inlet/outlets and didn't find it any 'laggier'.
The N54's don't have lag in my experience! I would go 7", as larger surface area also means that potentially you should have a more efficient cooler, lowering IAT's plus you have the headroom that if you go 300+kw in the future you wont need to upgrade your cooler. |

Thanks for the input guys, inlet temperatures were getting to 50-60 degrees in 3rd and 4th on only 14.5 psi. So an upgrade is definitely needed to support the new tune.

I went from stock to an ER competition series intercooler which is 6" and supports over 600hp and didn't notice any lag, in fact low down it's more even more punchy, but I think that was because I also installed the chargepipe and forge DV at the same time

How much cutting/trimming is required for the 7" FMIC?
Debating this (5 vs 7) in my head right now... Lol Also does the upized intercooler affect fitments of the factory fog lights? |

The 7" does not affect any fitment of any components - only the plastic behind the bumper needs slight trimming.
The plastic that requires trimming does not affect the function of anything on the car, and the trimming modifications cannot be seen once the bumper cover is remounted. It takes about 10 minutes once dissassembled to trim it by hand with a hack saw, and smooth the edges neatly with a file. |

Atm are good, I just did Darwin gazzanats cruising and go to woe, even while wot all the time intakes temps were around 110f average, I only had to watch oil temps which never reached 120f. So intercooler can definitely handle being at the track.
