Base Audio, HiFi, and Logic 7
I previously owned an e90 335i, which had the factory Logic 7 sound system. This system was amazing. It was a really big issue for me when purchasing my new car; I had to have the upgraded Sound system.
Well now I am super confused. I cant find out what system my new e92 has. I cant find the invoice for my car to simple see what options my car was built with. So after some common sense, I figured I was assed out since I didn’t have the L7 EQ settings. So what does my car have? I can’t tell if my car has the Base Audio system that BMW offers, or the HiFi. Is HiFi the same as L7? What’s the deal? So I went to BMWusa.com and I played with some of the options and I came up with this. (take a look at pictures included) The Logic 7 sound system has the speakers on the door near the side mirrors. But once clear the setting the speakers disappear. Now, this is the confusing part. My car has the speakers on the door near the mirrors, speakers in the front door and 2 speakers in the rear (on the side). But it doesn’t have the speaker in the center of the dash (near the vents). What system do I have?

I think the L7 system is standard in 09+ models. Not sure.

BMW stoped including it as a factory option in the 335s at the end of 2008.

Hmm, idk then. I remember reading somewhere that the HiFi system doesn't have a center channel and I don't know why the basic would have one if the HiFi doesn't.

do what i did, i have HIFI too
change door speakers to logic 7 change front tweeters (OEM is crap) add an amp then after listening to it for awhile get the SWS-8 subs for the underseat enclosures i spent a little less than Logic 7 (around $700) but it sounds much better than Logic 7 its actually a little better than the individual audio on the M3 i'm also selling the logic 7 rear deck speakers as a well as the center speaker if you're thinking of adding it i also have the 2 tweeter pods for the rear of the car PM if you're interested |

What amp did you use?
4 channel or 6 channel did you actually order logic 7 speakers for the door? Most are suggesting Rainbows, Focals , Morels or MB's what did you use for tweeters? Did you have to add line converters for your amp or any signal processing ? Was it a DIY install? |

Soundstream 405s, its a 5 channel amp 4x50 for front/rear speakers and 240w to the 2 sws-8 cost me $200 i bought a set of logic 7 from ebay, you see them somtimes on the forum i'm sure the aftermarket stuff is better but i did not want to hack my door panel to makethem fit logic 7 means you undo 3 screws, replace speaker, and put the 3 screws back in if i had more power, i would have gone for aftermarket with 50w rms the logic 7s sound really good for tweeters i used an old favourite of mine Infinity EMIT, they are the best tweeters i've ever heard very hard to find but anything aftermarket is better than the OEM crap no line converters as the Soundstream accepts a balanced signal, which is what our headunit puts out, other advantage of balanced is zero engine noise/whine i bought a rockford fosgate 3sixty.2 and i used it for about 2 weeks its amazing, so much stuff to adjust but honestly, i think the system sounded best without it so i took it out i did everything myself door speakers tweeters is fairly easy installing an amp is a little harder, but its ok if you're handy with wiring etc i just pulled out the small connectors from the OEM amp plug and i twisted the wire from the RCAs and speaker wire around it ghetto i know but it works and i can always reinsert the connectors back into the OEM amp plug and reinstall the OEM amp i actually have anther soundstream 405s for sale, asking $175 shipped i bought it with the intent to have one 405s for the left side of car and one for the right, great stereo seperation that way i have more power to subs and they can be in stereo i hooked it up and it sounded amazing but my lights were dimming they draw a lot of power (50amps each) so i went back to using only one i also want to sell my 3sixty.2 with Dell X50V pocket pc to adjust it asking $325 for that shipped, if you're interested |

HiFi ohm rating
I also have the HiFi 10-speaker audio system in my 2007 328i sedan, and when I removed the underseat subwoofers to upgrade them to Earthquake SWS units that I got for $90 each, I realized that they were 2-Ohm speakers and not 4-Ohm like I was expecting.
Bavarian Autosport sales 4-Ohm speakers for "Standard Factory Sound System", which I'm guessing is for the 6-speaker Base Audio, and 2-Ohm speakers for "Upgraded Factory Sound System", which I now realize applies to both HiFi and Logic 7. I thought I had a "standard" system because it sounds like shit, but I guess Base Audio is even shittier! |

That said, you are overthinking the 2/4 ohm thing. I've used 4 ohm speakers in place of two ohm in several Bose, HiFi, and Logic 7 system upgrades. The question should be, what's the overall result? For example, I've used 4 ohm 4" and tweeters in place of the HiFi front components, and they've played loud enough, sounded much better, and improved the bass through being less efficient. But there are others that would not sound better. It's a question of efficiency, impedance, etc. My advice is, experimentation is really valuable (whether you do it or someone else does). |

So if I have the HIFI system, an easy upgrade would be to change the tweeters only? With what?
I like the HIFI sound but if I can increase the quality a little bit with a minimum of $, why not. |

If you like stereo a lot
Logic 7 is less expensive than an aftermarket upgrade that will raise the performance to a similar level from the feedback on these boards.

When the upgrade from HiFi to Logic 7 was 1200, you could get much better performance buying HiFi and upgrading in the aftermarket.
Now that the signal ouput when coded to Base Stereo is messed up, and the tweeter sails aren't there, it is actually harder to upgrade than before. Since the difference between Base Stereo and L7 is now $875, the value is correspondingly greater. If you want to upgrade past L7, at least we know the drivers like an MS-8 |
