Procede N55 PWM Meth with Ignition Advance
I think we all knew that BMW was sand bagging the n55 engine a bit. Only only was it stuck with an undersized turbo but it was also tuned very conservatively with a ridiculous ignition advance map and very deliberate IAT/timing compensations. Make sense considering that the n55 engine runs 3-4 deg less timing than the n54 engine which is also operating a few deg away from MBT in many conditions.
So we've been beating the heck out of our FBO 135 all week. And as you would expect, it responds nicely to methanol injection. IATs are controlled. Ignition advance is maxed out. Power is nicely consistent. But is there still more on the table? So taking advantage of a Procede feature we rarely use, we started to ADVANCE ignition timing over the factory targets. So far, we are running up to 4 deg advance when meth is spraying and it's like the car picked up a bigger set of balls. The engine sounds throatier and is noticeably stronger at WOT. No signs of knock retard despite the more aggressive timing curve: Going to hit the dyno either tomorrow to day after and dial things in a bit more. The idea of advancing timing is to improve the engines mechanical/thermal efficiency. Which is especially important since the small turbo prevents us from improving the engines volumetric efficiency. So basically, we are squeezing out power from new areas. As an added bonus, this also translates to lower EGTs and higher MPGs. For reference, just an extra 2 deg of timing in the FBO/ASR turbo n54 (@16psi) was worth 25whp. Hard to say how much it will be worth on the n55 running less boost (due to turbo limitations). I'll keep you guys posted... Cheers, shiv |

Another tuning log. Just testing different meth nozzles/DC%. Now it looks like a n54 timing advance curve
The next several weeks is going to be pretty serious as far as n55 development goes. Getting the meth/fueling system designed/dialed in properly is just the start. The next step is the cool part! Should be hitting the dyno later this week. Just need to do some more road testing first. |
