Refer to page 46 in the Engine Management document from the above link. That's all I know.
This tells me that the coupe has the wheel-well heat exchanger and the sedan has the oil-to-coolant heat exchanger, regardless of transmission choice.

The same area of my car looks nothing like ac2's picture, unless I am missing something. I'm AT e92 335i with sport package. That area on my car is actually mostly covered up by plastic, pics inc.

Interesting concelo; could you guys post a further away pic so I can check to see exactly where I should be looking?

Weird, that's where I looked. Check it out, mine has a solid piece of black plastic right there.

I just checked again, mine is definitely just solid plastic with a long vent leading about 12 inches back. I see no oil cooler.

Just like mine, i.e. you have no air-to-oil cooler.

However, it is interesting that we have 2 AT e92's..one for Canada, one for Mexico...Mexican has it and Canandian does not. Now obviously the climate is much different, but that imho is a strong argument for the air cooler to be better at dissipating heat than the coolant cooler.

PS The vent is to cool the brakes.

Well that's a pisser. Sure, Canada is cold in the winter but Toronto is regularly well over 100F in the summer; and I know St. Louis is the same. Actually ya, I am pretty irked about this - so US/Canada is the only two countries (most likely) that get hosed with no air-to-oil cooler on the AT.

I wonder if they will change this in an upcoming MY, wouldn't surprise me if we see more overheats.

Sedan with Manual and Sport

Hi all,

Just FYI, my sedan has the manual transmission with the sport package.

It DOES have the cooler in the lower passenger grill area as in the other photos.

Thanks for the update, so MT everywhere = air-to-oil cooler
AT everywhere but US and Canada = air to oil cooler? We should have someone in the UK/Mainland Europe check their car.
AT in Canada/US = no air to oil cooler

Either way, I find this incredibly lame.

OK we need alot more data points to draw a conclusion.

List e90 or e92, country, step or manual, build date, and cooler yes/no.

Back in '01 BMW was taken to task for changing the steering rack in the 3 series mid-stream. Thus, people like me bought the car with the old rack, and ended up with the new rack which was artifically boosted and lost road feel.

BMWUSA, after enough complaints, agreed to replace every new steering rack with the old upon request. I of course had it done. Perhaps this will go along those lines?

One can only hope. I can't think of any reason why the AT in "cold" countries would be sans air to oil cooler.

Thanks god i was somewhat useful here... i started to feel like a troll

Maybe once summer hits the Step owners will notice somthing and there will be a small recall. Again guys, this isnt a big deal. BMW or yourself can easily install one I would think.

Now the better question is, should Step owners mod their cars without proper cooling?

Don't sweat the troll thing, I troll like every auto board in existence and I've never discovered missing oil coolers.

The modding's the real issue. I think even in hot summer temps with the AC on in traffic odds are good the oil will remain within the operating temps; but throw a xede into the mix and I really don't know. Luckily as you mentioned this is not a particularly difficult thing to do should one decide to do it. It is kind of a pisser, though.

On the other hand we might start seeing a wave of "soft shut downs" come summer, in which case I can foresee a lot of four letter words spewing forth from AT owners mouths.

Not modding mine, no need for me to do so. I'm not worried about oil temp. oil-to-coolant heat exchanger should be sufficient, daily driver is not hammered 100% of the time.

For sure, this thread is mainly for extreme conditions like track use or modding.

Daily drivers who arent modding shouldnt be worried at all. IMO

I still want one even after knowing this as i dont see it being an issue either way.

I would wonder though if in a hot climate during even normal driving it would seem an oil cooler would help some. I wonder if the manual cars runs slightly cooler than the autos overall.

There is a sticky in the forced induction engine section of this forum with four PDF files from BMW. The engine management file discusses the cooling system in good detail with schematics. Those documents seem to suggest manuals have two oil coolers and autos have three. BUT there is only one engine oil cooler. They show one gear box oil cooler for the manual and two for the auto if I am understanding correctly.

An update - rumor now is that the manual has an engine oil cooler and a transmission oil cooler and the auto has only the tranny oil cooler; no engine oil cooler (located in right wheel arch, as we can see in this thread).

Looks like some auto guys will be adding oil coolers.
