So here's what I've learned: Most of the damaged cars were offloaded in NY, and dealers that have clients with damged cars have been notified for the most part.
So here's two indications that your car is safe: a) it was offloaded in SC b) your dealer dosen't know the status of the car (because they were not contacted by BMW about the damages) someone correct me if I'm wrong.... |

BTW, if you call BMWNA, give them your name and VIN #, they will investigate to see what the status of your car is. I just called them, and they said I'd receive a detailed report within 72 hours... not bad eh? |

No news today about my car. My CA said he has not heard anything.
Bronco, what has BMW agreed to do for you, since you know your car was damaged? I am just curious how they are handling it, since I may be in the same situation. |

any cars that are offloaded in SC basically had negligible physical damage. now, they will be conducting alignment checks, and peform other tests to see if the car is still "OK." Cars should arrive at dealerships shortly....

My CA update
Background: car was offloaded in NY, NY on 12Jan08 for delivery to a dealer in PA.
Update: BMW has not given my dealer an ETA for arrival at the dealer, in fact, they have not gotten any of their vehicles out of NY, NY VPC since the Courage incident. Apparently, and as would be expected, there is a big backlog at the VPC. My inference is that they have to do more than the usual amount of diligence on all of the cars, even those that have no visible damage (like mine)--I'm not sure what that diligence is, but it appears to take a while! If your car is offloading elsewhere (SC), you may actually get it quicker. |

I will be taking the close match - he agreed to swap the trim, which was the only difference)

Update from CA:
"We finally received word from our contact at the port. (It took several phone calls and a couple of e-mails) Your vehicle has not made it to the final processing center yet, however they have looked at it for me and tell me that there is no visible damage. Your vehicle will be thoroughly inspected before it is released to our dealership. The main points they want to check are vehicle alignment and the points along the frame where the vehicle was tied down. At least we now have some piece of mind. It may take a little longer to get here because they are inspecting every vehicle that came off of the Courage for any underlying damage. I hope it will make it this month." |

You mean just because of the potential hidden damages? I guess I could just walk away from the deal, and go order at another dealership. But I am not sure I would do that, if there were no cosmetic damages, and everything else will be covered under warrantee. Am I missing something? I don't want a bad car, but don't want to wait 2 more months either.

You dont have to go to another dealership to re-order the car.
Just make sure you start the negotiation process from scratch (with your current dealer), and make sure that you get a loaner (if you need one) Good luck with your decision - I know it is a hard one, but I would never be able to live with the thought that my car may have some hidden damages, or that it was repaired....

I am worried also because it is a convertible. Would my car now have a greater chance of rattles, squeaks, leaky roof, etc. because of what it's been through? If I thought it would work out like your deal (in that there's another car out there with specs close to mine), I would do that in a heartbeat. But mine is a 335i e93 with a 6spd MT - not too many of those on dealer lots I would imagine! But it is worth a check I suppose.

So, if you take Bronco's word for it, the only reliable BMW's would be the ones that were smashed at sea. All the others . . . on any boat . . . there's no telling what may have happened to them. Ridiculous.
