Just for thought: rear mounted turbo

I'm thinking that the best way to get a big snail on one of our cars is to 1. Keep the existing snails in place 2. Move from a 2 pipe to 1 pipe exhaust (ala AMS) 3. Ditch the rear muffler and swap in a turbocharger, something like a GT35 4. Run the new charge pipe where the old 2nd exhaust pipe would have been 5. You'd need three bypass valves: two at the exhaust manifolds and one at the intercooler. 6. Extra BOV necessary. The reasons are fairly obvious for the BPVs and BOV. Transition from the small snails to the large snail really shouldn't be that difficult to program. Somewhere around ~4k we cut off our existing turbos via bypass valves and shut the BOV on the GT35's line. We would keep the low end responsiveness of our existing vehicles, prolong the life of our stock turbos, and get some serious top end kick. No "lag" on the top end because the larger turbo will have already spooled from exhaust gases coming from the existing snails by the time the transition occurs. No muffler necessary because.... well three turbos should quiet things down enough. What do you guys think? |

I like this idea, this may be our only way to get some bigger snails..

Not enough room to get piping from the rear of the car to the front. This works well in american cars as they usually have a lot of room. Unfortunately, our cars are way too jam packed to get the piping to work.

not reaally a good option for small displacement and higher boost. I'm very familar with the ststurbo's coming from the GTO community. They are a very well built setup with good performance for the big V8 guys

Yeah, people have made rear mounted turbos work.
Stupid idea, though. You lose a lot of enthalpy on the hot side with that long route and have high head loss pumping the air all the way back to the front of the car. |

If we can run dual 3" exhaust pipes, we can run single 3" exhaust, 3" charge pipe. I can't speak as to placing bypass and BOVs. Just an idea for big power, that's all... |

STS is local to me and I was doing some contract work for them a year or two ago...
What a bunch of clowns. In fact, those dickwipes still owe me money now that I think about it. They spend more time worrying about suing people for making rear mount turbo kits than taking care of their own business. Yes, they are suing people for making rear mount kits. They found some way to patent it. |

I am making 660rwhp and 690rwtq on 10psi with a properly designed APS twin turbo kit. Powerband looks FAR better than that too. I need to swing by the dyno to pick up my chart, and I can post it. Could have pushed it much further, if not for our awesome 91 octane gas
STS style setups suffer from so many issues its not even funny - starting with the massive lag induced by 2,000ft of plumbing, and a turbo that is sitting way to far from the engine, allowing the exhaust gasses to cool and contract drastically. Then, we can start talking about the oiling issues, and bla bla bla bla bla
