summary thread about diesel problems?

I have been trolling around autotrader and have seen several very nice 335d cars on there with good mileage for reasonable prices.

I have seen some of the threads with people complaining about reliability and they mention various 3 letter things.

Is there a good thread that summarizes the issues and remedies for these problems that would save me some reading time?

Look for "alphabet delete" for the emissions stuff.

Some of the "what problems exist I'm looking to buy" have a short summary.

Also, there is at least one acronym/abbreviation thread around.

Rollo, I was where you are 3 months ago. There are several issues that hurt the reputation of the 335d. They are, however, all emissions related. I live in Texas where emissions testing is not required for diesel vehicles, and I am mechanically inclined. So I bought a beautiful Alpine White 2011 335d. It has been to the dealer once with an ses (service engine soon) light once. Emissions related issue that was fixed. I am 200 miles away from the 50K warranty ending so I plan to do the modifications for less than an extended warranty would cost me. The guys that have done the mods report having a truly enjoyable, reliable car with none of the issues that are associated with the d's.

One a side note, THE TORQUE OF THE DIESEL IS UNBELIEVABLE!!! And 28 MPG in city driving is also a perk.

I am not a 335d expert but I hope this helps you decide to bite and join the d group.

Aside from CBU and DEF tank/pump/sensor failure, not a whole lot.

Not sure it is an issue but you may find yourself wearing the back tires out prematurely due to torque enjoyment 😜

LOL...thanks guys. I am not really in the market for one yet...just pre-planning for my actual shopping in about 18 months.

When the d came out I was really amped about it--amazing torque with great gas mileage and I assumed great longevity.

Maybe I'll be able to find a low mileage 2012 CPO when I start shopping for real.

BB Cuda can correct me if I am wrong but I am not sure if they made a 335d in 12. when I was looking for them, I never saw any listed. only up to 2011.

Yeah, unfortunately with the F30 body change in 2012, BMW in its infinite wisdom decided to drop the 335d engine.

I like my d, purchased it in April still under factory warranty and with 28K miles on it.

My advise/opinion, don't buy a diesel for assumed longevity, I think that diesels lasting longer than a well maintained gasoline engine are things of the past. I've seen plenty of ford trition V10s cross the 500K mark, and I personally had an Acura which was 350K and still going strong. Besides the body will be crap at 500K miles anyway, and I doubt the transmission will last 500K trouble free miles. Diesels in part used to last longer than gasoline engines due the lubricating properties of the fuel, which has for the most part disappeared with usld. I'd also not buy it because of assumed superior resale, the d doesn't seem to hold any premium over the 335i. Buy a d because you like it and want to own a diesel.

P.S. if power is what you're after there is a far bigger selection of parts/bolt ons for the 335i gasoline engines.

I will add to the list of likely failure for car with more the 50 K miles:
Crankshaft pulley 11-23-8-511-371 and 2 belts.
Throttle Actuator 11-71-7-804-384

The guy you're criticizing has an E90 335d; he's apparently hanging onto it.

i apologize if my comment sounded criticizing... i meant to ask a valid question why he bought the d after all the stuff he mentioned. just want to hear his personal perspective... if he regrets purchasing his d in april.

A bit of a longish story for me, on why I choose a D :-)

For me, I've always wanted to own a BMW (its been a dream of mine). I wanted to own the ultimate driving machine and I like sports cars, the M was out as too expensive in upkeep.

This is my first BMW, and I wanted the E90 because everything I read said the E90 was the last great BMW sports sedan, and I like sports cars. Road and Track did a E90 vs F30 comparsions and liked the older e90 better. http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars...-65-1-roa0813/

I test drove the F30 sport/m-adaptive suspension several times and found it well, boring to drive. Its not in any way a bad car, its just not a sports car. I had a APR Stage III 400hp GTI as my daily driver and well anything seems sort tame I suppose

Next, Car and driver dropped the F30 from their 10 best list and also said the F30 was a softer more luxuruous and less fun than the E90. http://blog.caranddriver.com/a-tale-...-so-different/

So I wanted an E90. Why the D? I liked the power delivery and the instant torque. I wanted something different than all of the big lag big turbo cars I've owned in the past, it really makes tackling traffic easier. Finally it was power without compromise, I could have a car that stock did 0-60 in less than 6 seconds and still got decent fuel economy. I like the environment and always try to buy a car that is more fuel efficient than my last car. (MK6 GTI 23/32)

Basically I see the D as a 335i, without any downside. Is the D less expensive to own, given its problems with carbon and emissions reliability vs the 335i's turbo failures and hpfp, probably a wash. That wasn't a factor in my decision making...

It was also I've wanted the challenge of modding a diesel, done pleanty of gasoline cars.

I've already swapped tires to Michelin Pilot Suport Sports, Koni FSDs are on now (installed this week by me), Next up will be new brake pads, and a tune.

Nicely wrote. My reason for d was so I don't get laughed at while commuting to work going 80mph. I've owned bmw for long time and had minimal to good experiences.

Hope you get your d to next level!
