Petrol to reach £1.50 a litre by end of 2008
Now I don't normally read the typical facist, right-wing rags like the Mail or Express. But on the way into work this morning, I was listening to the radio where they mentioned this article.
Now we all know that nearly 70% of fuel costs are tax (both fuel duty and VAT). Therefore when the wholesale cost of oil goes up, then percentage wise, so does the forecourt price. However, since we've reached the £1 per litre (I paid £1.12 for Diesel on the A14 yesterday!), I think something is going to have to give! The "motorist lobby" in the UK is such a large body of people, why haven't we stood up to this huge injustice in taxation. I'm not normally the person to take direct action, but it got me thinking that why as a "nation" are we continually ready to keep taking this kind of taxation bashing from the government? If we were french, we'd be out on the streets, blocking ports, burning tyres and sheep and generally getting very upset about it As motorists we already pay the following taxes: VAT on Car Purchase RFL based on CO2 emissions Company Car Tax based on CO2 emissions (if not privately owned) Insurance Premium Tax VAT & Fuel Duty on Petrol/Diesel Congestion (sic) Charging (in London) Tolls for (M6 Toll, QE2 Dartford Bridge, tunnels, etc) Assuming we did get some kind of concession from government (an election pledge), then no doubt they would find 'other' ways of taxing us, both directly and indirectly. Similarly they would probably find it easier to justify road pricing, which I'm definately not in favour of, as an alternative. On the PM's website there are the following Petitions regarding Fuel Pricing: Fuel Pricing Petitions Thoughts?

Almost always with the first 5 pages Strictly speaking the last 2 are not taxes. The M6Toll is a commercial operation and for all of them you are paying to use a service (admitedly with the dartford crossing you don't have much choice though). £1.50 sounds a lot (I currently pay around £1.09 for Shell V Power), but .. it's a reminder that this stuff is a scarce resource which took millions of years to create and is running out. Protest is your democratic right, but I'm not going to join them and I hope they don't disrupt my life in the way they did in the 1990's. |

We're already friends with Saudi, Kuwait and other great democracies and that hasn't helped!

Just been listening to 5Live, broadcasting from RAF Lakenheath, where the GIs pay 28 pence/litre! If any US govt tried to tax petrol like we do here they'd be toast and rightfully so.

No matter how many protests and blockades take place, the Governments position will not change and we will be left to pick up the bill.

If its not transport tax, its a ridiculous non-domicile taxing of assets! Of course there are people who do agree with these "taxing the wealthy" schemes, but somebody better tell Mr. Brown and his fellow colleagues that this country will not run itself! ...hmmm maybe I will... TSL

Yup,
I've just spent a week on holiday with the Mrs deciding where baby Thorpe will be best brought up. The UK is currently bottom of the list!

Both of the two main politcal parties, which are different shades of the same political niche, have no real commitment to reduce fuel duty. Therefore, we cannot infleunce future pricing through electoral pressure, which could be 2 yrs away anyway.
In the presence of a critical mass of people disenfranchised from politics, our "democratic" governments can hike taxes to fund whatever operations they wish: illegal wars, surveillance, ID cards, and "defense" (often offensive) projects which delivery late and overspend etc As referred to elsewhere, protest alone cannot change policy but left unhindered, our successive governments will become more powerful and the tax burden will escalate to new levels. The unrelenting attack on the wallets of motorists is set to continue. |

well if you think about it the government has to pay lots of money to people that can't be arsed to get a job and fuel tax is a good start.
under the labour government we have seen some good things but social services spending is completely out of control. There are people 'earning' stacks by being unemployed and we are paying for it! I have people in hospital in need of social care, but because there's limited funding cos the money goes to these to**ers on 'benefit', they stay in hospital for weeks. Oh and the best bit - a hospital bed costs £300-£400 a night but the government would rather we spend the money using the place as a hotel than spend £50-£100 a day on care. Which is also why hospitals are always full Anyway - Fuel at £1.50 a litre - well i would'nt be surprised but maybe not as soon as the end of 2008 |

I have just returned from a week in Madeira tonight.
Fuel was Euro 1.20 per litre and on top of this : The main roads put ours to shame with them all being built in the last 20 yrs with EU funding. Also the people were really nice and the temperature was 24 degree at lunchtime and 16 degrees at night.

This Labour Government appears to be one of "Tax and Spend" with the Government thinking it knows far better than the citizens. There appears to be far too much wastage in Government with all the MPs being on a gravy train.
Unfortunately, MPs do not live in a real world. Their allowances and expenses seem to be tax free and they get affordable pensions and expense allowances. All these inefficiencies, lack or reality and quangos means we have to pay far too much. Gordon is loving the price of crude going up as I reckon he makes £Bs for each $10 rise in the oil price. As long as my car does 40mpg+, I'll live and suffer the rise but vote against Labour in the next election.

But, since social care doesn't exist in any coherent way, the NHS ends up providing it, which means you can't do what you are supposed to do - provide medical care. One other thing that astounds me about the NHS. I know an orthopedic surgeon and I was amazed to find that he has NO secretarial or administrative support. Any manager in a private company knows that to be efficient they have to delegate, but for a surgeon that doesn't seem to be acknowledged in the NHS. So instead of operating, he ends up writing notes all evening (which could be dictated and typed by an admin, then checked by the surgeon). |

Not strictly true, but I would suspect that it varies PCT by PCT
My sister-in-law is a Secretary for the Oncology dept at her local hospital. Her job involves typing up 'dictated' and 'written' notes from consultants
