Breaking in period query

I've done 800 miles on my E92 335i. Last night, I really did cream it.....pretty much red-lined it....a few times...

had to teach someone a lesson at the lights!

Bad? Good? Unfortunate? Doesn't make a difference?

Lots of debate on this subject I've found. 800 miles sounds like a reasonable amount to me. I suspect it is probably outside what the manufacturer would suggest you do, but then as the finance manager at my dealer admitted when I asked him about breaking in (not sure why I picked him) - "we don't with the demos". If you wanted to keep the car for 10 years, didn't want it to use any extra oil etc. then maybe you'd stick to the letter to the breaking in guidelines but I suspect BMW are being careful. I see it a bit like you should never shut your PC down by holding in the power button - it's right, you shouldn't, but once in a while won't kill it

1250 miles / 2000km is meant to be the period, but red line at 800 miles I doubt it has done any harm, might even do it some good by this point.

No difference at all.

Everything in moderation.

redlinign dosent do any damage really, bouncing off the limiter may cause valve bounce but not always.

aslong as she was warmed thru and the oil was upto temp then you just doing whatthe rest of us are doingin our performance 3 series!

The rev limiter does not cause valve bounce ... it will fade out (or shut off, staccato-style) your ignition.

If you had an old XR2 you will know about valve bounce It occurs when the valve spring cannot handle the dynamic loads, usually at high revs. Naturally interrupting the power ... same kind of staccato style pulsing as a rev-limiter.

Great analogy

Just as in a DMS remap is like turning up the Bus speed on your new Core 2 Duo PC - It runs a bit hotter and faster and may or may not shorten the cpu lifetime.

I have had chats with several people at the factory plants about this, and there are a few different opinions, quite a few say that due to the tolerances they make the engine to these days its not really required as much.

Obviously once it is broken in you should redline it in every gear all the time.

Now I like that analogy more (DMS) ! I must admit - anyone who I tell about DMS says "but why doesn't BMW do that if there is no trade-off".

I'm tempted, just waiting for someone else on here to get their e90 335d done and for mine to do a few miles. When I asked DMS it didn't seem to be a particularly earth-shattering difference 0-60 but maybe I missed the point....

So DMS are 'over clocking' BMW's

So what we need is a little bit of software (like 'coolbits' for NVidia graphics cards) that opens up your ECU to some do it yourself overclocking.

Lets just hope that turning it up too far will not cause a crash

think standard the 335d must do mid 5 to 60 even tho the factory quotes 6 dead, cant really see a car which does a late 13 sec quarter doign 0-60 in 6 secs, more liek 5.5-5.6

There is a school of thought that the harder you run a car in the faster it is!!

Im of the opinion that if the car is warmed up properly then reving the car to its max will be fine.

A frind of mine ALWAYS buys ex demo cars and hes never had a problem......and his cars always seem to be fast.

This is very true. When we had our M3 the water temp would show normal in 5 minutes however the oil temp could take up to twenty minutes to get to 75C in the winter.

Regards

Chris

How long does it take (on average, in "mixed" driving) to get the car up to temp ? (diesel, 335d) ?

Blimey, most of my journeys are less than 10-20 minutes, so I can never rag my car ?

I like that theory!!

To be honest - I have taken it well past the recommended 4500 rpm many, many times (when it is warmed up of course) but this was the first time I completely red-lined it....

Also, thanks for all the info chaps....

It seems a travesty not to give a car of this power a good thrashing once in a while!
