I'm only guessing on this. LED retrofits like OSS use rings that where used in the older E46s, rather then a LED projecting a light into a optic, there is LEDs lined up in the shape of a Angel Eye Ring so it is always pointing forward rather then lighting up tubes as in the previous e92 headlight.

Just how people attempted to copy the Audi LED light strips onto other cars, no one could match the quality of a major car company like Audi, so I am guessing BMW Angel Eyes LCI are the same idea as the LED rings but with much better quality.

Yeah I have no idea how they're arranged but the 2011 housing appears to have a clean, uniform ring of light, much like you would achieve from a CCFL tube, only this appears to be an LED fixture. I'd like to see the guts of one, but can only guess the optics are changed and it utilizes high-draw LEDs affixed to the light tube in each fixture.

Retrofits like the Weisslicht or LUX position the LEDs close to each light tube but it's not a direct fitment and the LEDs might not match the level of intensity the OEM has figured out.

I'm just curious to see how it's done.

there are the Alpine and Camaross HID angel eye kits which will let you run up to a 20k color rating

20,000k is a very very cool blue. it depends where you draw the line of what is white and what is blue. If anything its closer to blue then white

More inclined to think 6000K...@ 5000K, you're shifting into yellow territory.

I'm guessing that too, but honestly I have not seen a color like it that could match, it kind of has a violet purplish hue to it.

So what is the consensus here for the AE's that best illuminate the rings on a E92? Is it the LUX H8?

^ bingo. if you do not want to send them to OSS, that is. Lux has the most uniformly lit rings, HID AE's is too blinding.

I'll ask this again, have you seen them in person? HID Angel Eyes only look blinding in pictures, they do not blind when your looking at them because it's not projecting light out.

Not sure if this has been mentioned as I didn't want to read through a million posts, but I believe the pre LCI E92 angel eyes were merely poorly designed (the actual housing). I don't think it matters how bright of a bulb/led/hid/whatever you put in there. It will still look uneven.

That is very true, and the brighter it gets the more easy it is to see this problem...

If you have factory xenon housing, then our HID Angel Eyes will work.

They were designed to be illuminated with just one 35W halogen bulb-- the inner ring receives more light through the surround of the housing while the outer ring relies on the light pipe to guide light from the inner fixture.

The precise-aimed LED units do a better job of focusing output on the light pipes, but the drop-in bulbs and HID kits will always look uneven, due to the design of the housing.

I looked at a LCI headlamp up close today and noticed the light source is square in the center of the headlight housing, from a LED fixture below the halo rings. Both rings use the same exact type of light pipe that our pre-LCI cars have, but the light pipes guide the LED illumination into the middle of the ring, in a Y-shaped fashion. This design helps to make the intensity of both rings equal.
