Michelin and BMW to contest the French Superbike Championship

Michelin and BMW will be tackling the series with the same three riders who will be flying the two firm’s colours in the Endurance World Championship, namely Matthieu Lagrive, the reigning French Champion Sébastien Gimbert and Erwan Nigon. Preparing the bikes and tending to them at events will be the responsibility of the Gilbert Pernoud’s Up Racing operation based in Annecy, France.

The S1000 RR, after a long time, appears to be a serious attempt by BMW to get into high performance motorcycling. Superbike racing is a serious business, and it is too soon to guess if the bike would take the stress, but its published parameters indicate it might be competitive.

If the published parameters are correct, this bike should dominate. Significantly better power to weight than the rest of the competition, and the best example of function over form I've seen in a "street legal" vehicle since the T1.

Did it say BMW Korea at the end? With the likes of Suzuki and Yamaha, guess it makes sense that Asia is the place to develop a superbike

Good point. We all enjoy reading parameters, but in racing they mean little - things are decided on the track. In terms of potential, the bike is a two-wheel equivalent of the F1 1.09 BMW-Sauber, and may well end up the same way. It will be an interesting season. It is much easier to fabricate joy than speed.
