E90 Xenon lights out.

This isn't about modifications, but I hope this post is in the right thread.

I was driving in the rain today when my dash showed the "check light" symbol. It turns out that my driver's side headlight is out.

I took it to the dealership and they told me that I have to get the bulb replaced. I have an '07 with 68,XXX miles so warranty will not cover the bulb and I will have to pay $500! WTF! They also mentioned that it could be the module (which they will cover), but I would need to get a diagnostic check ($175).

My question is it usual for a Xenon light to go out before 75,000 miles? Could it be the module?

Any suggestions to what I should do?

Thanks.

$500 You can get a pair of Phillips D1S Ultinon 600K bulbs for around $170. There is a DIY guide for the bulbs replacement. You can also order the bulbs and bring it to a local shop and have them install for you. My guest is $50 for the installation but don't take my words for it.

Thanks for the help.

I'm searching here and ebay for a good deal. I don't think finding a good deal of the part would be a problem, but I do need to get it aligned correctly so I have to find a good shop locally to help.

I don't think you need any alignment. Just take out the old one and put the new bulbs in.

I just realized that the angel eye rings are out, and not the main xenon light. I'm guessing it'll be cheaper for me to replace the small halogen bulb and not the main light.

I do hate how to stock ring light does not match the main light.

Which light do you guys recommend I can use for replacement so it will match the main light?

Pick up either the 6W HighPerformanceBulbs.com AE units or the MTEC V3's
HPB link: http://www.highperformancebulbs.com/bmwaneywh6wa.html ($50)
MTEC V3 link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MTEC-V3-6W-L...item3cc129b4f7

OK, and this is kind of random (but relevant), but if anyone has an E39/E53/E60/E63/E64/E65/E66/E87, HighPerformanceBulbs.com has released a new kit that is pushing the limits of the Plug-and-Play angel eye upgrade. 10-watts to each side!

And you want even better news? They should have a 10-Watt version for the E90 Pre-LCI and the E92/others that use an H8 bulb very soon!

Needless to say, I'm excited. Oh, and the price point's pretty hard to beat. How does $50 sound?*

*Unaffiliated with HPB, just one of the regulars!

What is the difference in appearance and also in risk? Would the higher wattage damage anything?

Guaranteed no damage with either of these products. Truthfully, the MTEC V3's will probably be brighter, but I haven't seen them bench tested next to each other yet, so I can't say. However, if you're on a budget, the HPB unit will be significantly better than the R-Dash product (similar price point) and the Bimmian product (rebranded R-Dash at 3x the price).

Sure thing! It should be soon, the last I checked, HPB was in a waiting/testing phase for these products.

Correction, the HPB 10-Watt AE upgrades are out for the E90/91 Pre-LCI now!
E39 type: http://www.highperformancebulbs.com/nebmwaneyupw.html
E90/91 type: http://www.highperformancebulbs.com/nebmwaneyupw1.html

The difference in brightness is astounding! The 6W's were already really quite bright, so this should be fantastic!

It says 2005-2007 - are you sure they fit on an 08' Pre-LCI E90?

"Fits the following BMW Models:

Fits E90/E91 2005 - 2007 BMW 3 series Sedan and Wagon"

Good catch! They will fit all E90/91 Pre-LCI (2005-2008) equipped with Xenon headlights; and any E90/E91 LCI's (2009+) equipped with Halogen headlights*)

*Some basic modification required for the Halogens, see this DIY thread for more info: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285855

Not sure. But let's get back on track:

New Up-and-comer: http://www.highperformancebulbs.com/nebmwaneyupw1.html ($70)

Well known competition to the LUX 5.1's: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MTEC-6W-Ver-...item5891b6f12e ($140)

The venerable LUX 5.1's: http://www.luxangeleyes.com/products...=3#quicktabs-1 ($210)

Honestly, it's your call on which one to get. I've heard people rave about the 5.1's, but a few people have lately claimed that the MTEC V3's are brighter than the LUX's. Now mind you, the 10W AE's from HPB just came out, and I have not seen them yet, so it remains to be seen how these will compete. However, the 10W's are 66% more powerful (spec-wise) than either the LUX or MTEC's. So, in theory, they should be brighter than both of them.
