VTT Stages 1 finally came in
Like the title state my VTT stages ones came in on friday. Took a little longer then expected. Just under 4 weeks from payment to door. The packaging looks great. Should have car back tomorrow. Very excited!

Good stuff, op. I'm quite interested in how well stage 1 turbos perform on premium only and with an e85 mix.

I plan to get number with both 91 and e85 mix.

High performance applications should never use a clipped turbine wheel. Clipping causes a minor increase in the wheel's flow capability; however, it dramatically lowers the turbo efficiency.
The reason for "stage 1" turbos not selling too well is that the stockers get to similar power levels at lower boost and most people know it. |

no billet wheel, ouch!
Helix has stg1 with Upgraded thrust, billet wheel for cheaper than VTT. Also yes they are tested and plenty of people are running them with results, logs, dynos ect. anyhoo - Post up some logs when you have them installed.

You're correct that clipping reduces efficiency, but not the efficiency of the compressor wheel, efficiency of the conversion of exhaust flow to turbine rotation. If you have all the spool and boost capability that you want (and more) but are running out of breathing room up top, clipping is a viable option. Even Garrett mentions in their literature why clipping would make sense in certain applications. I 100% agree that if you're designing a system from the ground up, it makes no sense whatsoever to have to use a clipped wheel. It's more appropriate when you're stuck with non-optimal constraints and want more flow and don't mind passing up some spool. I personally chose non-clipped turbines in my application. As it were, spool is so quick that I probably could have gone clipped. *shrug*

Ahh my mistake did not look like the billet wheel from the pics. Looking forward to your results!

WHP Level supported (with proper fuel, upgrades, and tuning) Stock - 470WHP per vargas website. I'm not running meth but do have access to e85. So we will see what the dyno says

You really can't make a sweeping statement like that.
We're in agreement that clipping is not going to be in an ideal design. Anything stock frame is a compromise, unless you're at stock power levels. Clipping then becomes a viable option depending on your goals. I work with turbine design for Honeywell, who owns Garrett. I do understand very well the aero involved and you are 100% correct that doing much of anything to a well designed blade will certainly kill the efficiency. It's just that on the final package, given the very tight constraints of the stock frame set up, sometimes it can be a good decision. Stage 2's or bigger are a "better" design but not within the small budget/stock frame/want more output window.
