Was recently caught in a 30 doing 37 i think? I had history of points, but none on my license at the time of getting caught.

I got offered the young drivers awareness course. Of course I was going to take it. Either 3 penalty points & £60 fine or just £84 fee for the course and no penalty points?!
It was a no-brainer for me (basically paying an extra £24 to have no points!)

The course itself was actually really interesting! I learned a lot. No police involvement, an advanced driving instructor from the AA took the whole thing. Showed some great videos of the difference of driving at 30mph and 32mph. If you drive at 30mph say your stopping distance in the dry is 1m (for example). If you're driving the same conditions at 32mph and someone was standing at the same spot where you were able to stop before, you'd actually hit them at 17mph, even though the stopping distance is only increased by say 1.2m? Don't quote me on those figures but it was something like that!? Also if you're driving at 30mph you're covering the length of a double-decker bus every second!

Edit (upon reading over my post)
Jeez, listen to me, I could nearly work for these people myself - Im brainwashed! lol

The lack of consistency applied really grinds my gears. I know people that have been offered courses for doing 40+ in a 30 and the two times I have been done for speeding were 35 in a 30 (3points, £60) and 79 on a motorway (also 3points and £60).

It seems to totally depend on the police force in question and how far away they are from filling their quota of 'serious criminals' that month

+1
I have been lucky that I've usually came out the good side of the inconsistency but it stinks that it does vary so much - I can understand the frustration!

Getting pulled for 79mph on a motorway must be almost unheard of. What happened?

I got done for 81mph in a 70mph when I had the road to myself on a perfectly clear day.

3 points and £60 fine.

In Fife the speed cameras are ran by a private company who obviously have to generate money to survive.

This was in 2007 on M4 near junction 14, 10pm at night virtually nothing on the road.

My car (VW golf at the time) was set on cruise at an indicated 80 on the speedo.
Basically I was just pootling along minding my own business.

I overtook a plain silver unmarked Vauxhall Omega. I indicated, pulled out, passed, indicated, pulled back in.

Car behind seems speed up and match my speed after i pull in (Was going real slow, maybe 55-60mph before I overtook).
Get a bit suspicious so I ease off a bit down to about 72.
10 seconds later blue lights on and they all over me like I've just been on a killing spree. They were so close to the rear of my car I was actually afraid to brake!!

Haul me in the back of the unmarked car, read me the riot act about what a dangerous lunatic I am and gave me a producer as I didn't have an insurance cert on me (it was a company fleet car so we never had actual certs with the cars) and a 60 pounder with 3 points thrown in.

It was a women police officer doing the shouting and male officer sat in the passenger seat who said absolutely nothing but looked quite embarrased about the whole thing.
I was a nice as pie about it as well, I know that being sarcastic with them gets you nowhere.

I was literally in disbelief about the whole thing, I honestly thought I was on candid camera or something....

I'd have done an emergency stop in front of them.

If I'd known what they were going to do I would have, I really would.

I assumed at the time they were just going to give me a ticking off or check my licenses or whatever though.......

I learnt my lesson though - if a copper ever gets that close to me again, the anchors are going on hard

Presume that's just a throwaway comment?
Dangerous driving on behalf of the copper or not, slamming your brakes on at high speed would obviously be disastrous-especially with the events of the last few days in everyone's minds.

In all honesty I probably wouldn't have the balls to do it and I like my car too much but I would have loved to teach that miserable copper a lesson

Sounds like she was setting a fine example-always a few bad eggs.

It was a Fiat I was driving. The speedo has no reflection on the true value.

I thought it read high 70s when I noticed the camera pointed at me.

What's the point in having a go at the coppers for doing speeds 10% over the limit? Ive seen the damage speeding does first hand and it ain't pretty.
I can understand peoples frustration at getting done a few miles more than the 30mph limit but over 80mph you car is like a bomb.
Speed limits are there for a reason if you don't like the penaltys its simple..... don't speed.

Bit of a stupid comment especially when you see the carnage on the M5
