when to start using leather conditioner
I just recently got my car, it actually only has about 1200 miles on it and I was wondering when is it a good time to start using leather cleaner and conditioner for my Coral Red leather seats?

Now.
Like all good maintenance and care habits, you start early. My philosophy about cleaning (all things, car, house, etc.) is that it's much easier to keep things clean than it is to get things clean. Every couple of weeks or so I do a wipe down of the seats with Mequire's Gold leather cleaner/conditioner with a microfiber cloth. The conditioner will help keep the leather soft. Most good leather products also offer some UV protection too.

I used leather cleaner/conditioner as soon as I got my car back from Europe. I would reapply cleaner/conditioner to the driver's seat more often than the other seats.

Good to know, especially as I have a convertible, and will be driving it quite a bit with the top down, exposing it to more than typical levels of UV radiation.

Is 303 Protectant a good one to use on the leather? I have it for the vinyl, but haven't tried it on the leather yet...
Will it make the seats/steering wheel slippery?

I would not use 303 for leather, only vinyl.

Do it immediately, but clean the leather first with a good leather cleaner. I use Zaino Z9 (cleaner) and Z10 (conditioner) and couldn't be happier. I would do it once every 3-4 months, and probably more often on the driver's seat.

Yep, as others have mentioned, one can never start too early on properly maintaining your vehicle. This goes for all aspects of the vehicle, leather, paint, wheels, etc.

ive been searching about cleaning leather, and it seems that some people clean & condition every several months, and some people every couple weeks...why such a large discrepency and what is the proper frequency? i plan to order some Z9/Z10 today....

I've been using the Mequire's Gold Class leather cleaner/conditioner as a frequent low maintenance cleaning, and I'm pretty happy with it. Use a microfiber cloth and it works great.
For deeper cleaning I would use a paste cleaner followed by a conditioner.

Lexol poured into palm, rub hands together and rub into leather. I find less waste and you can really massage that stuff in, around corners and curves. Then buff off excess. I think I heard my car moan once. She really likes it.

Well, I'd say it's mostly the same reason some people wax their car more often than others. However, I'd say the benefit of waxing more often would be more apparent than frequent leather cleaning. Stick to the every 3-4 month plan. If you find you're leather is getting dirty sooner, clean it. Don't make it more complex than you have to. Keep in mind that the lighter colored leathers will show dirt easier, etc.

I'm a big fan of the Pinnacle leather cleaner/conditioner products.
I started using the separate cleaner, then conditioner. I switched to the combined cleaner and conditioner product without any noticeable difference. The leather needs moisture. Condition every time you clean, or use a combined product. I clean and condition (simultaneously) every time I detail the interior. This Pinnacle product also works great on the interior vinyl/plastic trim pieces. Careful to avoid getting it on tint; in fact, I rarely touch my tint if I can help it. I haven't washed my interior windows in months - I just avoid touching them to keep them clean. |

Absolutely. Big Z9/Z10 fan here. The Z10 is just amazing on the leather and smells delicious. Started with it when I did my post-delivery new car detail and have been using it every few weeks. The heat inside cars in AZ is fairly brutal, and the leather deserves as much protection as I can give it...

I've been a HUGE fan of Zymol leather creme conditioner lately. VERY easy to apply, just wipe on and buff off. Leaves the leather feeling soft, conditioned, and a VERY pleasant natural scent.
I've never used the Zaino, but I hear that's good also. |
