N55 Half Engine Light

So my brand new 2011 335i coupe with 1400 miles just got the half engine light. Not only am I angry that I just spent over 50 grand on a car that went into limp mode while I was driving, but I am disappointed in the brand as a whole. My car is now being towed over to my dealership, where they will fix the problem. My car offered no symptoms of the HPFP failure, this literally came out of nowhere. I know you guys probably don't care, but I just needed to vent a little.

That's what my expectations were, too. Not only did my selling dealership not give a rat's a** when my car died 3X on the expressway, they told me the car was performing as designed and the problem could not be duplicated. Had to live with the car dying at will for 6 mos.....

Seriously, you may have to put up with "cannot duplicate car performing as designed" once. I put up with it 3X. But when I got really upset, they opened a PUMA case. That's when it got fixed after 8 days. In an ideal world, a BMW owner shouldn't have to get upset when they have a full warranty, but it is what it is. G/L at least there are those of us out here who do know how you feel...

Did it actually go into limp mode or did you just get a 1/2 engine sign? And are you tuned?

My 1/2 engine was VANOS intake solenoid, not HPFP....it was yellow, never red...

I live in LA and I've had my car serviced at a number of different dealers. I have a 2007 335i, so I've run the normal gammut of problems with this model (HPFP's, vanos solinoid, door lock problem, etc.).

In my experience however, each and every one of the dealers were helpful and doing their best to resolve any problems. After all, this makes good business sense... if they provide good warranty service, you're more likely to use them after the warranty expires and, let's face it... THAT is where the real money is made at the dealership.

sigh- here we go again. One, just because you got the 1/2 engine light does not mean its HPFP related. Its very possible, but you would have other symptoms. I dont know why everyone automatically assumes 1/2 engine light to HPFP failure. There is actually a current SIB out for this particular issue with N55s, its a simple reprogramming fix and you will be on your way.

Now I understand your frustration about spending 50k on a vehicle, and you already have a check engine light. But this could happen on any vehicle. Your dealer will take care of if it for free under warranty and everything will be fine again.

If you get a 1/2 engine light, there should be no reason for the tech to say "cannot duplicate" there will be a stored fault for the car stalling or getting the 1/2 engine light. Sounds like unfortunately you should look for a different dealer with better techs that know what they are doing.

Actually that wasn't the 1/2 engine light....that was SES on, SES off, dealer clear, doesn't come back immediately, stall on the way out of their lot....

I know this is off topic from the OPs post. You can PM me if you want, it just has me curious now. So they cleared the faults, do you happen to know what faults were there? Maybe they couldnt duplicate the stall, but were their faults related to the stall, there must have been if you had an SES light? If so they should have been able to diagnose it (depending on faults) even without it stalling. Sounds like to me a lazy/unqualified tech which is really unfortunate.

Thanks for all the concern, it feels good to have a community behind me that knows how I feel, and is concerned about my car. My car is not tuned, and was not showing any symptoms of HPFP.

So my SA just called me and told me my car is ready to be picked up! He told me that the battery was faulty and was running at like no charge, then told me about a DME software update, something to do with a recall. Mind you this was at 7 in the morning...I'm a student...my first class is at 1....so I'm not a morning guy which made it hard to understand what he was saying.

The DME software update was the programming I mentioned for your 1/2 engine light.

How this was ultimately solved was not the SA, a guy standing around the area where you pay saw the look on my face when the girl asked, "Did fat a** explain to you what was done?" I said "no, he didn't, but from what I understand from the phone, nothing was done and he told me, and I quote, 'I don't know what it is you'd like me to do.'" That guy said would you like to speak to a foreman and perhaps take a drive and explain what's going on?

I did that, and the foreman who seems to be politically and warranty $$$ removed, got technical. He told me next time this happens, bring the car back without an appt. We'll pull it right in.

So to the amazement of the SA's who were all on facebook when I opened the door as soon as they unlocked it, I really burst in like Denzel saying the hospital is under new management. It was early and they got the foreman on the Nextel who said yeah, I remember that 335i, pull it in and plug it in.

At that point a PUMA was opened up, my car was returned 8 days later, and it's been fine since. That was 4/10. I guess my irritation is that the OP may have to go through all that, when in reality, you simply expect the da** dealership to fix it under warranty the first time.

New car, DME needs update, and battery faulty. The first of the 3 of my visits for stalling was "faulty IBS sensor." The foreman told me that makes absolutely no sense and I have no idea why that was replaced on your car.

I can't get technical with the electronics, but people, would a battery problem light up the 1/2 engine? Seriously?

Yes, if your car isn't receiving enough power, then how are all the electronics suppose to work?

You'll get a yellow battery, then red battery if there's a charging problem. The vehicle imho wouldn't reduce power because of a charging/battery issue as far as I know. Point is dealerships make up a lot of BS when they really don't know, don't care.

Recall for 2011 N55 cars? I don't believe the BMW recall covers N55 cars....
